Special Collections, UW Libraries, UW18861 Funding for encoding this finding aid was partially provided through a grant awarded by the National Endowment for the Humanities. Civil servant, elected official, moral reformer, surveyor, and engineer, George Fletcher Cotterill helped shape the city of Seattle in the literal as well as the figurative sense. Cotterill was born in England to Alice and Robert Cotterill on Nov. 18, 1865. In 1872, the Cotterill family immigrated to the United States and settled in Montclair, New Jersey. Cotterill graduated from high school as class valedictorian in 1881, and studied surveying and engineering under the tutelage of a New Jersey county engineer for the next three years. During this time he participated in the platting and construction of Arlington cemetery. In 1912 Cotterill again ran for mayor, this time on a platform demanding moral reform. In an "open" city where vice had flourished since the Klondike gold rush, his campaign targeted Hiram Gill's legacy of graft in city government as well as rampant prostitution and gambling houses. Cotterill won this election, helped in part by the new ability of women to vote. Cotterill's term was punctuated by conflict and controversy, due to corruption in municipal government and the police department, labor unrest, an unsympathetic

Extractions: A 16-screen movie theater in downtown Evanston? Hard to believe, but it may happen - along with a shopping center, new apartments and perhaps even a new hotel as parts of a complex proposed by the city of Evanston and a private developer. The development will require the relocation of two popular longtime eateries on Church Street, Dave's Italian Kitchen and the Pineyard Chinese restaurant. However, the new area promises to bring a multistory shopping mall, several new restaurants and the multiplex cinema to a part of downtown Evanston that currently consists mainly of parking lots. The property for the project, which will be known as Church Street Plaza, became available after Northwestern agreed with the city of Evanston to trade the University-owned land for a smaller parcel in the northwest corner of the research park near the commuter railroad tracks. That understanding cleared the way for the city to continue working with the private developer on the complex. Northwestern does not yet have specific plans for the development of its property.

Extractions: This listing will be from several sources. Rose Cemetery is large and I did not have time Summer, 2000 to transcribe it with names and dates. A lot of these names will just have the Block and Lot after them. Some will have dob and dod after them. The 2,000 plus that I copied from Volumn 1 of the cemetery books at the City Of Hobart will have the information available from that book. It will list, for most, the state born, age at death, parent/parents name, date of death and cause of death. For more information on a name listed here, especially the Block/Lot names, contact the City Office at Hobart. They will be able to give you some dates. In later volumns, the parents name info is being phased out The following is the first 1,000 names. Still have several thousand more to go. I will add to this as I get them transcribed. Then the whole listing will be taken down temporarily and "fine tuned". In the meantime, perhaps this much help. Please be patient. Rose Cemetery J-Z
