Extractions: La situation linguistique Haïtienne se caractérise par l'emploi de deux langues par certains individus d'une même communauté. On constate que le créole et le français occupent des secteurs d'utilisation selon un mode dynamisé par certaines variables. Ce chapitre comporte deux parties. Après une introduction consacrée au créole et à sa formation, la première partie aborde le fondement théorique de la diglossie et des variables sociolinguistiques. Bien qu'un débat puisse avoir lieu sur le terme « diglossie », la position de Ferguson (1959) sera utilisée comme point de départ. La seconde partie porte sur l'utilisation du créole, du français et de l'anglais dans quelques secteurs comme la législation, la presse écrite, la presse parlée, le cinéma, la littérature, le commerce. À la base de la compréhension de cette situation, il y a la mise en situation du créole par rapport à son origine. Albert Valdman (1978), qui a écrit plus de 20 monographies et des articles sur le sujet, développe avec précision les distinctions entre le pidgin, le créole et les autres langages similaires mais distincts comme le petit-nègre, l'annamite français de l'Indochine, le français populaire d'Abidjan, etc. Les concepts de base selon Valdman (1978, p. 5) sont ceux de langue base et langue substrat. La langue base est celle du groupe dominant dans la situation sociale qui a provoqué le besoin d'une langue véhiculaire interculturelle et intercommunautaire. Cette langue conserve toujours son prestige culturel et social. La langue substrat est celle du groupe socialement inférieur : population autochtone dont le développement technologique est en retard sur celui du groupe venu de l'extérieur ou population servile que le groupe dominant a trouvée sur place, a importée par la force (traite des escalves) ou a attirée par des avantages économiques.
