[Lucy] TWO DAUGHTERS: of Barbara Chenoweth Martindale(5) THE DOWNEYS: AMANDA ELLEN MARTINDALE (6) 1834-1914 Amanda Ellen, the 9th child of Barbara Chenoweth and Jesse Martindale, was born on May 17, 1834 in Wayne Co., IN. Several years later her parents moved to Miami Co., where Amanda, at the age of 18 met and married James Downey, the son of John Downey and Mary Good. Like Amanda's mother, the Downeys had come from Virginia, traveling through Ohio and eventually to Indiana. The two families of Downey and Martindales intertwined for some time. William Downey, a brother to James, would marry Amanda's niece, Alice Guyer. Mary Jane Downey, a sister to James, would have a son, Leander Edwin Alger, who would marry Amanda's grandniece, Maggie Brown. Amanda and James had 4 known children, probably all born in Wabash Co., where the family moved after their marriage. Here James died at the age of 76, in 1905. Amanda survived him by nine years, living to the age of 80. They had 19 known grandchildren.
