He entered the Army as Second Lieutenant on June 15, 1941 and served at Ft. Monroe and Ft. Eustis. He was then promoted to First Lieutenant on February 1, 1942 and served at Ft. Bliss, Camp David, and Ft. Fisher. He also served as Battery Commander at the last two locations. On January 15, 1943, he was promoted to Captain and sailed from San Francisco in July of that year; he landed on the Fiji Islands and was reassigned to an anti-aircraft group heading for combat. Marion saw limited action at Guadalcanal and took part in two battles in Bouganville. From Bouganville, he sailed to Luzon, Philippine Islands late in 1944 and participated in a convoy that was thirty miles long and ten miles wide. An assault landing was made on Luzon in Lagaina Bay, which was the identical spot the Japanese had landed four years earlier. He then became attached to the 14th Corp G3 section to lead a battalion through Clark Field and on to Manila fighting along the way. Marion took part in securing Santo Thomas University where women and children were interned and played a role breaching the Wall City in Manila. He was then transferred to G3 section of the Sixth Army Headquarters and appointed Assistant G3 in charge of coordinating and supervising the combat testing of new equipment sent to the Pacific Theatre. Two important weapons emerged from this operation Snooper Scopes and Sniper Scopes using infrared, which are used extensively today by the Air Force. Extractions: "This race and this country and this life produced me, he said. I shall express myself as I am." James Joyce, Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man Main A reader sent me a bit of trivia she thought I might be interested in (she was right!) John Keats , great poet, who died in 1821, wrote his own epitaph, which is as follows: "Here lies one whose name was writ in water." But actually, the full epitaph reads like this: This Grave "Here lies One Whose Name was writ in Water." "the Malicious Power of his Enemies" ... Woah. So this got me to thinking about epitaphs in general. As a kid, me and my siblings had to memorize William Butler Yeats' epitaph, in order to get our allowance of 50 measly cents. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, could knock that epitaph out of my brain. It is: Cast a cold eye
Extractions: John E. Arner probably David HEINRICH U lrich probably born 27 December 1816 in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania and christened 07 February 1819 (Sponsors: parents)(recorded at Klingensmith (Salem) Church in Allegheny, Westmoreland, Pennsylvania); possibly died 1880s; married after the 1860 census probably in Armstrong County, Pennsylvania to Esther Ann Adams (daughter of John and Jane Adams ) who was born 12 April 1834 in Washington County, Pennsylvania and died 01 May 1918 at Crawford, Dawes, Nebraska ( Payette [Idaho] Enterprise , issue of 09 May 1918). He was listed as a clerk in 1860, as a patent rights agent in 1870, and as a photographer in 1880. They lived at Dayton (Wayne Township), Armstrong, Pennsylvania. On 24 October 1881, the property in Dayton borough of John Arner and wife Esther A. Arner, late of this County was sold at a court-ordered Sheriffs Sale to settle debt and damages to Wesley Pontius, who was also the only bidder, and who bought the property (Deed Book 56, page 163). [NOTE: Wesley Pontius was a prominent farmer, landowner and businessman in Wayne Township. Or maybe just a land baron; its hard to tell; his biography in the County History is typically fawning and overwrought. J They (or maybe just Esther and the children) moved to Holt County, Nebraska; then in 1886 to Crawford, Dawes, Nebraska.
