Extractions: April 27, 1854 The first officer killed in the line of duty was Cyrus Beebe. On April 27, 1854, Beebe whose date of entrance to the City Police is unknown, was working with Licking County Officers, who were looking for a William Jones, Alias William Morgan. Jones was wanted by Licking County for burglary and was reportedly hiding out at the Scioto Hotel , in Columbus. When the officers arrived at the hotel, Jones refused to surrender, and a gun battle ensued. Beebe was shot dead by Jones who made his escape into the crowd.

He grew up and lived in Topeka, Kansas before attending the California Institute of Technology from 1917-1919. In the 1920-1921 academic year, Rankin studied at the Federal Polytechnic Institute in Zurich. He received his degree in civil engineering from Princeton University in 1922. China Assign ment which discusses his years in Taiwan. Rankin's first wife, Pauline Jordan (they were married in 1925) died in 1976. In 1978, Rankin married Ruth Thompson Garcelon. Rankin died on January 15, 1991 at the age of 92. Ruth Thompson Rankin died on January 27th, 1997, in Punta Gorda, Florida.
