Extractions: Scottish journalist, playwright, and children's book writer. Barrie became world famous with his play and story about PETER PAN (1904), the boy who lived in Never Land, had a war with Captain Hook, and would not grow up. The first name of Peter Pan was almost certainly taken from Peter Llewellyn Davies (1897-1960), one of the several Davies brothers that Barrie knew. "When the first baby laughed for the first time, the laugh broke into a thousand pieces and they all went skipping about, and that was the beginning of fairies." (from Peter Pan) J.M. Barrie was born in the Lowland village of Kirriemuir, in Forfashire. His father, David Barrie was a handloom weaver, and mother, Margaret Ogilvy, the daughter of a stonemason. They had ten children, Barrie was the ninth. His brother David died in a skating accident. David was the mother's favorite child, and Barrie tried to gain her affection by dressing up in the dead boy's clothes. The obsessive relationship that grew between mother and son was to mark the whole of his life. Barrie published an adoring biography of her in 1896.

Extractions: What would a list of Scottish notables be without mention of that noble instrument the bagpipe? We know bagpipes existed in ninth century Europe, but there is some evidence that they were around long before that date. Bagpipes are found in many other countries besides Scotland, but they have become so indelibly linked with Scotland that the country and its ubiquitous instrument are practically synonymous. Pipes take many different shapes and forms, and though formerly used in pastoral celebrations, nowadays they are used for every kind of festival occasion including military pageants. And the piping in of the haggis on "Robbie Burns Nicht" is celebrated in whatever corner of the world Scots gather on January 25. Scotland has two types of pipes: the Highland and the Lowland or cauld-wind pipes, with the latter being bellow-driven (providing the cauld-wind), and including the Border pipes, used for reveilles and curfews by town pipers, but rarely played today. In the Highland pipes, air is fed from the mouth to a bag operated by the elbow, which supplies the chanter and two or three drones. By the mid-16th century, these pipes had been well established as military instruments.

P eter Pan

Extractions: J.M. Barrie Every child and every adult who is still a child at heart knows the story of Peter Pan, but fewer know that the creator of that timeless (and ageless) story was born in Kirriemuir, Scotland, and that the inspiration for many of his stories came from his Scottish home. Barrie was educated in Kirriemuir and Forfar, and later at Edinburgh University, where he studied English and graduated in 1882. He worked for the Nottingham Journal and later the St. Jamess Gazette of London before devoting himself completely to his literary career. His early works, published between 1888 and 1900, are characteristically Scottish in dialect, humor and sensitivity. After 1900, Barrie devoted himself to childrens books; The Little White Bird, which introduced the Peter Pan character, was published in 1902. Although the Peter Pan books (there are three in all) represent Barries best-known work, he was also a successful playwright. The author described his work as a means to play hide and seek with angles. Barrie shared his interest in fairies with his friend, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who will be featured later on in this months series on Scottish writers.
Extractions: Author and playwright. Born in Kirriemuir and educated at Dumfries Academy and the University of Edinburgh. Barrie is best known for the creation of Peter Pan, the boy who would not grow up, the inspiration for which came to him when a boy playing in the garden of Moat Brae, a house in Dumfries. Barrie's own character in many ways mirrored his creation; he was a small man and this lack of stature had always upset him, perhaps explaining why he related better to children than adults. His life was full of tragedy; the deaths of a brother, sister and his mother effected him deeply, his wife had an affair with a younger man and left him and two of his adopted children died tragically. All royalties from Peter Pan are now appropriately given to Great Ormond Street Children's Hospital in London. If you have found this information useful please consider
