Extractions: Show Clip from "Oh, Brother, Where Art Thou?" (Baptism scene, edited for language) That movie has become one of my favorite movies. And I particularly love that scene. As you watch the scene unfold you see the human need, the tugging of the heart and spirit as Delmar sees and recognizes the baptismal procession. He instinctively recognizes his need for spiritual cleansing and renewal. And he acts upon it. And then there's that last line of invitation, "Come on in, boys, the water's fine!" I love that. Every time we celebrate and someone is baptized, that's the invitation from God, "Come On In, the Water's Fine!" Every time we have one of those moments where our lives are renewed through a fresh outpouring of God's Holy Spirit, that's the invitation from God, "Come On In, the Water's Fine!" For those who have already been baptized it's an invitation to remember and be renewed. For those who haven't been baptized, it's an invitation to take the plunge. "Come On In, the Water's Fine!" Even Jesus, the Son of God, felt that need and was baptized. The Gospel of Luke describes it this way.

Extractions: A PLAYFUL STEP BEYOND But the suggestions that follow cannot The techniques for bringing courtship into the bedroom, and into bed, are rationing and teasing Do Do That Voodoo How can one argue with that? This is an entirely understandable and loving response. But what if a husband desires needs to be manipulated? What if the result is a marriage quickened with a return to the feverish dynamics of impassioned courtship? Just a nudge, gentle wives. But let me add, for any willing to give these ideas a playful spin, such romantic outcomes are not exceptional; they are the rule. Again, sex is not denied the husband, merely rationed. The wife controls the frequency of his ejaculations, guided by experience and experimentation, in order to maintain him in a healthy state of desire. Clearly, this is a table-turning on the husband, making it impossible for him to take his solitary pleasure and roll over, leaving the wife adrift. But this reversal of sexual dynamics is not designed as payback, or to fit any feminist agenda. It is prescribed because it works to the erotic advantage of both partners one writer describes this all-too-familiar phenomenon. How much fun is that?

Extractions: (Easter Sunday Homily) French writer Henri Barbusse (1874-1935) tells of a conversation overheard in a dugout full of wounded men during the First World War. One of them who knows he has only moments to live says to another man, Listen, Dominic, youve led a bad life. Everywhere you are wanted by the police. But there are no convictions against me. My name is clear, so, here, take my wallet, take my papers, my identity, my good name, my life and quickly, hand me your papers that I may carry all your crimes away with me in death. Jesus makes a similar offer this morning. In the reading from Acts of the Apostles, Peter describes all that happened regarding Jesus, how he was unfairly judged, sentenced to a cruel death, then beyond all expectation came back. He commissioned Peter and the other apostles to transmit the astonishing offer: Everyone who believes in him will receive forgiveness of sins through his name. (Acts 10:43) Peter himself understood the joy of forgiveness. In a sense he had committed the worst sin of all he denied that he even knew Jesus. Not once but three times. Not in front of some cruel tyrant, but before a serving girl. Peter wept bitterly. His shame could not be greater.
