Extractions: Fit to be U.S. attorney general? By HENRY J. WATERS III, Publisher, Columbia Daily Tribune Published Monday, January 10, 2005 A lberto Gonzales is no John Ashcroft. President George W. Bush has named his former legal counsel to become U.S. attorney general. The nominee is undergoing strong questioning by Democrats on the Senate Judiciary Committee. Bushs last choice, John Ashcroft, underwent similar questioning and was confirmed only in a strongly split vote. Given todays stronger Republican majority and the presidents recent successful re-election bid, Gonzales probably will have an easier time, but this does not reflect the qualifications of the two men. By experience, Ashcroft had nearly a perfect background for the job. The only questions were whether he could keep his personal views on abortion and gun control from affecting his public office activities. He also was accused of racism in disapproving an earlier judicial nomination.

Extractions: An Entry from the Archives Open Spectrum FAQ Back to Blog ... Richard Rorty January 19, 2003 MIT Session #3: The Web and Reality Here's an outline of what I think I'll be saying during the Me Speak portion of the session. I'd appreciate it if you'd kick the bejeezus out of it before I present it. Thanks. What makes the real world real? It's persistent. It's (roughly) the same for all of us. It's where the matter is. (But what makes matter interesting is that it's persistent and the same for all of us) Why are these marks of reality? Real = what exists independently of us. From this comes an awfully lot: The valuing of facts, knowledge as knowledge of facts, objectivity as the mood of facts. How do we know that which is independent of us? Create an inner representation. Then how can we know anything? Certainty grows as the mark of knowledge. This view is deeply alienating: We are alone in our own minds, each with our own inner representation of the external, real world. Can't ever really see what's real - stuck with what our head can hold.

The oak sleeps in the acorn; the bird waits in the egg; and in the highest vision of the soul a waking angel stirs. Dreams are the seedlings of realities. "Your circumstances may be uncongenial, but they shall not long remain so if you but perceive an Ideal and strive to reach it. You cannot travel within and stand still without .Whatever your present environment may be, you will fall, remain, or rise with your thoughts, your Vision, your Ideal. You will become as small as your controlling desire; as great as your dominant aspiration." James Allen, from As A Man Thinketh

One becomes a wise master by becoming conscious of one's innate mental power to influence...
