Extractions: Long before Nancy Drew, the Hardy Boys, Sweet Valley High, the Babysitters' Club, or Magic Tree House, series books provided a source of enjoyable fiction for children. The first children's fiction series appeared in the United States in the 1830s, and by the 1860s the genre was well-established and earning both praise and censure. I've been researching series books for over twenty-five years. This page draws upon some of that research; it is devoted to bio-bibliographies and commentary about nineteenth-century authors of series books for girls and younger children as well as samples of some of their writing. It includes some of the century's most popular authors and a number of lesser-known figures whose works now almost forgotten show the evolution of the genre. The most recent updates reflect my current interest in women authors, especially those slighted or omitted by traditional reference sources. Usually, such authors wrote only a few books or attained only modest success. Recovering their lives and works contributes to a better understanding of the development of series fiction and women's part in nineteenth-century publishing. Sokolov Nearly 400,000 books, periodicals, and newspapers were lost during the February 15, 1989, fire at the Library of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). The methods being used to save the remaining 300,000 water or fire damaged books are being published in the "Proceedings of the Symposium: Conservation and Disaster Recovery: International Cooperation at the Library of the USSR Academy of Sciences, September 24-28, 1990." Two of the new methods are being reported here because their technology is unknown in the USA, and these two methods could be modified into techniques that conservators could use for restoring individual books. The largest fire disaster in library history occurred at the Academy's library in February 1988. Every fifth book, almost 3.6 million books, was affected by water, smoke, or high humidity and temperature during those awful days. Initial estimates indicate the Library lost 400,000 of its books and one third of its newspaper collections. Nearly 200,000 books were identified as requiring restoration. The achievements in disaster recovery at the Library of the USSR Academy of Sciences between February 1988 and June 1991 may be summarized as follows:

As avid as National Writing Project folks are about writing, they are equally enthusiastic about reading, especially reading about writing. With very little encouragementokay, with absolutely NO encouragementNWP teacher-consultants (TCs) share books, titles, and favorite authors at every NWP get-together. For the past two years, NWP has given its network the opportunity to examine these very topics through the Authors and Issues Online Conference, a series of online discussions about writing instruction and the writing life. In addition to the ongoing conversations (to which participants are able to log on day or night), the conferences feature guest authors who make presentations, participate in question-and-answer sessions, and join in the online talk. Guest authors for the first two conferences were Donald Murray and Ralph Fletcher, respectively. Over the course of these conferences, we polled participants for suggestions of authors who might be well-received by NWP communities. As unscientific and incomplete as our poll was, it does give a snapshot of what some site directors and TCs are considering in their rich and varied readingsuseful information, especially as we approach the time for this year's summer institutes.
