Extractions: The transfer of ideas to the technological domain is focussed around the problems of artificial action (e.g, autonomous robotics), artificial perception (e.g., computer vision), and artificial cognition (e.g., fusion,planning, prediction). New approaches are assessed by applying them to real-world problems (e.g., driver assistance systems, biomedical image processing). At a theoretical level we contribute to the development of new methods in the relevant mathematical domains of neural network theory, evolutionary algorithms, and dynamical systems theory. The chair in Theoretical Biology is organized into a number of autonomous research group which span a wide range of fields from experimental neuroscience at one end to applied computer vision and engineering projects at the other end. Researchers in each group contribute the scientific culture of their area and help foster an atmosphere of creative interchange between the disciplines.

This field is not entirely novel, but what is clear and significant is that the life sciences community recognizes its increasing importance. This is the really new aspect: many experimentalists are beginning to accept the view that theoretical models and computer simulations can be useful to address the dynamic behavior of complex regulatory networks in biological systems. 2) Theoretical or mathematical biology has existed for many decades, as attested by the journals that carry these terms as part of their names. Until recently, however, these journals were outside of the mainstream and largely ignored by the majority of molecular and cell biologists. As the attitude to theoretical approaches in biology is shifting, it is not surprising to see their revival under new names, if only because a change in name is often needed to focus attention. After all, even at the cellular level, many sensory systems are built to respond to changes in stimulus intensity and adapt to constant signals.

Extractions: 1) Complexity theory, which describes emergent self-organization of complex adaptive systems, has gained a prominent position in many sciences. One powerful aspect of emergent self-organization is that scale matters. What appears to be a dynamic, ever changing organizational panoply at the scale of the interacting agents that comprise it, looks to be a single, functional entity from a higher scale. Ant colonies are a good example: from afar, the colony appears to be a solid, shifting, dark mass against the earth. But up close, one can discern individual ants and describe the colony as the emergent self-organization of these scurrying individuals. Moving in still closer, the individual ants dissolve into myriad cells. 2) Cells fulfill all the criteria necessary to be considered agents within a complex system: they exist in great numbers; their interactions involve homeostatic, negative feedback loops; and they respond to local environmental cues with limited stochasticity ("quenched disorder"). Like any group of interacting individuals fulfilling these criteria, they self-organize without external planning. What emerges is the structure and function of our tissues, organs and bodies.

Extractions: Welcome to the Santa Fe Institute The Santa Fe Institute (SFI) draws scientists from universities and research institutions throughout the world to pursue broad research problems. Much of the work focuses on the science of complexity (emergence), which examines underlying patterns and regularities behind a wide assortment of real-world phenomena. Research projects range from the communication patterns of ants to the way information spreads across economic markets. Emergence The vitalism/reductionism debate in the life sciences shows that the idea of emergence as something principally unexplainable will often be falsified by the development of science. Nevertheless, the concept of emergence keeps reappearing in various sciences, and cannot easily be dispensed with in an evolutionary world-view. We argue that what is needed is an ontological non-reductionist theory of levels of reality which includes a concept of emergence, and which can support an evolutionary account of the origin of levels. Theoretical Biology and Biophysics (T-10) The Theoretical Biology and Biophysics Group (T-10) at Los Alamos National Laboratory focuses on the modeling of biological systems and the analysis and informatics of molecular and cellular biological data.

The first steps towards a theory of biological form were already taken in Greek times with attempts - notably by Aristotle - to classify biological organisms and to understand their growth. By the 1600s extensive classification had been done, and many structural features had been identified as in common between different organisms. But despite hopes on the part of René Descartes Galileo and others that biological processes might follow the same kind of rigid clockwork rules that were beginning to emerge in physics, no general principles were forthcoming. Rough analogies between the forms and functions of biological and non-biological systems were fairly common among both artists and scientists, but were rarely thought to have much scientific significance. In the 1800s more detailed analogies began to emerge, sometimes as offshoots of the field of morphology named by Johann Goethe , and sometimes with mathematical interpretations, and in 1917 DArcy Thompson published the first edition of his book On Growth and Form which used mathematical methods - mostly from analytical geometry - to discuss a variety of biological processes, usually in analogy with ones in physics. But emphasis on evolutionary rather than mechanistic explanations for a long time caused little further work to be done along these lines. Much additional data was obtained, particularly in embryology, and by the 1930s it seemed fairly clear that at least some aspects of growth in the embryo were controlled by chemical messengers.
