Extractions: Serena Williams Born September 26, 1981 in Saginaw, Michigan, United States Tennis player, Olympic athlete, actor Ranked Serena Williams was born in Saginaw, Michigan, on September 26, 1981, but she and her sister were raised in the economically depressed and often violence-riddled Los Angeles suburb of Compton. Her father, Richard Williams, ran a private security firm, and her mother Oracene (who often uses the name Brandy) was a nurse. A fan of televised tennis, Richard Williams dreamed of the opportunities that might await his offspring-to-be: "I went to my wife and said, 'Let's have kids and make them tennis players,'" he told Newsweek . Venus, born in 1980, and Serena, the youngest daughter, showed promise from the start. "Venus and Serena took to tennis as soon as rackets were put in their hands," older sister Lyndrea told Sport magazine. Early Career Marked By Father's Direction The sisters' early training took place on public tennis courts in and around Compton, where they remember having to duck gunfire. Despite this difficult beginning, though, their skills developed rapidly. Serena entered her first tournament at the age of four and a half, and over the next five years, her father has claimed, she won 46 of 49 tournaments she entered. She succeeded Venus as the number-one player in southern California's highly competitive age-12-and-under rankings, and well before reaching adolescence both sisters had attracted national attention in the form of invitations to prestigious tennis camps, promises of lucrative product-endorsement deals, and glowing newspaper reportage.

Extractions: Mary Joe Fernandez So you are coming to Palm Beach to enjoy the weather, relax and play some golf and tennis....but once here, there are a few special attractions that you should put on your "must see" list. The Lipton Tennis Championships held in March on Key Biscayne could head that list. Just an easy drive south on I-95 and you are there. The drive to the area is just beautiful. Once on Key Biscayne you drive down a wide road with beautiful landscaping in the center divider and the waters of Biscayne Bay surrounding you. For The Lipton there is ample, ample parking. This is a delight as there are many other venues where the biggest hassle is finding a parking space! You like to watch good tennis? ... How much tennis? Would you believe over 50 matches at The Lipton throughout the day the first few days? It was terrific. We ran from court to court trying to catch everything ... which, of course, was impossible ... but we did try. There are ten One of the shops on the grounds was selling a huge, oversized tennis ball ... which turned out to be the favorite of the kids to collect autographs. Of course they had to carry these around with them all day, and they are not the easiest things to carry. Smart parents found large plastic bags with a handle to make that a little easier for them ... the parents, that is ... It seems to be the parents who end up carrying the balls. Why should a tennis match be different from other family adventures?

Extractions: Because of his amateur status, the 25-year-old Ashe, a lieutenant in the U.S. Army, was ineligible to receive the $14,000 first prize in the $100,000 event - at the time the richest tournament in tennis history. Instead, the resident of Richmond, Va. collects $280 in expenses, at $20 per diem for 14 days, including two days of practice. Ashe is the first American to win the U.S. Open men's singles title since 1955. He also is the first African-American to win a men's singles title at a Grand Slam Championship. The New York Times calls Ashe's victory "the most notable achievement made in the sport by a Negro male athlete." Australian Rod Laver completes his second Grand Slam and the fourth in the history of tennis, defeating countryman Tony Roche 7-9, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2 for the championship. Because rain delayed the final until Monday, the historic singles final was only viewed by a crowd of 3,708. Soggy weather further delayed the Monday final by one hour and 35 minutes while a rented helicopter flew into the stadium court at the West Side Tennis Club and dried off the grass playing surface.

Venus Williams makes her US Open debut, also on Arthur Ashe Stadium Court, and defeats Larisa Neiland in the first round 5-7, 6-0, 6-1.

The Acura Classic is a $450,000 total prize, Tier IIA event on the Corel WTA Tour that will be held at Manhattan Country Club from August 4 to 10. Top-seeded players such as number one ranked and Wimbeldon champion Martina Hingis and third- seeded Monica Seles are just two of the 28 singles and 16 doubles teams entered to compete. Defending Acura Classic champion Linsay Davenport, who currently stands at the seventh seed, will have to work overdrive in order to fend off numerous capable challengers to her title. Hingis, the youngest everWimbldon Champion, has deeb dominating the women's tour all year. She has lost only one match so far. At such a young age, she can look forward to many more winning years ahead. Hingis is one of the favorites to sweep the Acura Classic. Venus Williams, Southern California's 17 year old rising star, recently lost to Hingis at the Toshiba Classic after having caused a media stir, saying that her match against Hingis would be "nothing special." When asked in a pre-match press conference about her feelings about playing Hingis, Williams casually stated that it was just another game, meaning that she had to focus and play hard in this tennis match just like she should in every other match. Apparently, some members of the media found her comment to be arrogant and disrespectful. After the media hype and her disappointing loss, Williams seeks to redeem herself against Hingis this time around.
