Norman had 21/2 hours to rest for the final after defeating Harel Levy in a rain-delayed 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (10-8) semifinal Sunday morning.

AP FLUSHING MEADOWS, New York (AP) Too eager and much too wild, Venus Williams nearly turned her bid for a 20th straight match victory into a first-round debacle at the U.S. Open. After winning eight consecutive games and taking a 6-3, 5-0 lead Monday against France's Anne-Gaelle Sidot, Williams suddenly looked very ordinary, very vulnerable and not at all like a Wimbledon champion on the road to a second Grand Slam title. She sprayed her serves everywhere, ran her double-fault total to eight and watched Sidot reel off four straight games.

Extractions: 4 - Patty Schnyder(SUI) The 1999 Faber Grand Prix marked the 1st anniversary of Steffi's comeback from knee surgery. Steffi, seeded #3, was much fitter and match-tough this year, and she was ready for the stiffest challenges. Having jumped almost 20 spots in the rankings since last November, Steffi was in comeback mode once again, but, this time, she was going for a title! ROUND 1: BYE ROUND 2: STEFFI GRAF(3) def. ANNE GAELLE SIDOT 6-1, 6-3 QUARTERFINAL: STEFFI GRAF(3) def. BARBARA SCHETT(8) 6-3, 6-2 and soon the gap had been narrowed. With Steffi leading 3-2, the 6th game was again the deciding element of the set. After 6 deuces and numerous opportunities for both players, Steffi held serve to lead 4-2. Although this may not seem to be very significant, it snapped Schett's spirit and revved Steffi up to play better tennis. The last 2 games marked a great improvement in Steffi. Her grounstrokes were much crisper in the 7th game, which Steffi won to lead 5-2. Steffi didn't even have to hit a groundstroke in the final game. She aced Schett on the first point, and hit an unreturnable service to lead 30-0. Steffi finished the match off with 2 conecutive aces, and breezed into the semifinals with a 6-3, 6-2 victory, which, although it may seem easy, was a tough and good win for the champion. The ImPOsible Dream A local tennis player had won a Grand Slam tennis championship in mixed doubles . Po and sidot won their opening round match handily, but ran into a much http://easyreader.hermosawave.net/news2000/0720/coverstory.asp
Extractions: Two Sundays ago, the story scrolled by on the sports ticker, but neither ESPN nor CNN thought enough to report it. The event didn't appear live on television. It wasn't even shown on tape delay. The newspapers barely mentioned Hermosa Beach resident Kimberly Po and her achievement at Wimbledon. And the "Daily Breeze," in its editorial congratulating area Wimbledon participants Pete Sampras and the Williams sisters, didn't even recognize her. But rest assured. It was a big deal. A huge deal. A local tennis player had won a Grand Slam tennis championship in mixed doubles. "To win a Grand Slam is like a Nobel Prize or getting the Academy Award for a tennis player," said Donny Young, Po's Hermosa Beach-based coach for the past five years. "Any title in a Grand Slam is a monumental achievement," added Troll Subin, Po's personal trainer at The Yard in Hermosa Beach. "It's like winning a Gold Medal in the Olympics." "I have gotten so many e-mails and cards from friends," Po said. "It's been so nice. Quite a few have said, 'You're a Grand Slam Champion now. No one can take that away from you.'" Until last year, winning a Grand Slam of any kind had been out of the question for the amiable Po. The Rolling Hills native had been a decent singles player since turning pro out of UCLA in 1991, but hadn't had the kind of success she'd hoped for. Her world singles ranking seemed to stagnate through the mid-1990s. While she was making a good living, she wasn't winning. She contemplated quitting.
Extractions: Tennis tournament , is a private club founded in 1868 originally as The All England Croquet Club, and its first ground was situated off Worple Road, Wimbledon. The first meeting of The Lawn Tennis Championships in 1877 enjoyed a garden party atmosphere, and attracted a few hundred spectators. Situated since 1922 at Church Road, The Championships is the only Grand Slam tennis event still held on grass. As a highly professional tournament, it attracts an attendance of nearly 500,000 people and through press, radio and television a following of hundreds of millions throughout the world. There are 375 full members of The Club, plus a number of honorary members, including past singles champions, of various nationalities, who have rendered distinguished service to the game. In addition, there are about 100 temporary members, who are elected from year to year, and active players who are in a position to make regular use of The Club and to play in Club matches during their period of membership. The present Club colours, dark green and purple, were introduced in 1909, following the discovery that the previous colours of the Club were almost identical with those of the Royal Marines, which were blue, yellow, red and green. The decision as to why dark green and purple were chosen is not stated in the Club's records.
