This is made worse when it is people I respect and have supported through the years such as Rio Ferdinand and Dwain Chambers, so I was even more disappointed early this year when I heard that Greg Rusedski had failed a drugs test. For many British tennis fans Greg Rusedski has always lived in the shadows of Tim Henman. Rusedski was born and raised in Canada but when he gained British citizenship in 1995 he elected to represent Great Britain. In truth this was a major boost to British tennis, with Henman also breaking through we were given a new light and not only did it give the fans two promising players to follow in tournaments, but improved our Davis Cup team and we were able to compete on the world stage at last with the likes of the USA and Germany who seemed to be dominating the sport at the time.

Extractions: Western Mail THERE was a time when Greg Rusedski was the most fearsome server in tennis. Not any more. Yesterday evening, with the scoreboard lights twinkling and the clock striking 9.12pm, Rusedski departed Wimbledon at the second round stage for the third time in three years, eventually out-gunned on the Centre Court gloom by Sweden's Joachim Johansson. The scoreboard told the tightest tale, 7-6, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6, to the 22-year-old in the white bandana who stands 6ft 6in tall and punches every inch of his height. But, after a fourth set tie-break fought out in near darkness and gathering hysteria which the Swede took 7-5, you had to admire the courage of the Montreal-born star who adopted the British flag 10 years ago and has committed himself to the cause with grit and determination for self and country ever since. It was an evening when the line judges were required to bob and weave like middleweight boxers to avoid the hail of aces which came their way, regularly registering around 140mph on the radar gun.

Greg Rusedski (File photo) (Getty Images) Great Britain's Greg Rusedski, enjoying his healthiest run since 2002, beat Australian qualifier Nathan Healey 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 in the second round of the Washington ATP event this morning (AEST). Rusedski, a left hander who turns 32 next month, withstood 12 aces from the 243rd-ranked Healey and fired nine of his own to win in one hour and 21 minutes and book a third round date with Croatia's Ivo Karlovic. "I was pleased to get my first match done. Nathan was serving well in the first set," Rusedski said. "I got my rhythm in the second set and was able to close it out." Foot, knee and back injuries slowed Rusedski in the past two years as did off-court struggles before being cleared of doping. Seven of his first 12 losses this year were to top 10 opponents, two to Swiss world number one Roger Federer. But Rusedski defended a crown on grass at Newport last month and reached the Indianapolis semi-finals two weeks ago.
