Extractions: Novotna leaves a champion Click here for more on this story Posted: Monday September 06, 1999 09:45 PM By Jon Wertheim, Sports Illustrated NEW YORK Even the Dutchess of Kent, whose shoulder once served as her de facto kleenex, tried to dissuade her. But after 13 years of a sinuous, maddening and ultimately gilded professional tennis career, Jana Novotna announced Monday that she's hanging up her sticks. Unlike Steffi Graf's characteristically grim press conference to harken her retirement a month ago, Novotna betrayed her customary sense of humor and a palpable sense of relief. "I have decided to finish the year, fulfill my obligations for the fall, and then not play anymore next year," she said. "I have been thinking about the decision for a very long time and the timing for it is right." In part the timing is right because she's still not fully recovered from the ankle injury she suffered at the French Open. The last of tennis' Mohicans, a pure serve-and-volleyer in this age of relentless baseline bashers, she is rendered impotent when her mobility is limited. Extractions: Jana Novotna: "I'd like one more chance to win another Wimbledon" Third seed Davenport reached her first ever semi-final at the All England Club, with a 6-3 6-4 triumph as rain disrupted play for the third day of the championships. Czech veteran Novotna failed to find the form that secured her an emotional first Grand Slam title last year as she was dispatched with ease by her American opponent. Extractions: An Interview With MARTINA HINGIS and JANA NOVOTNA VERONIQUE MARCHAL: Questions. Q. You were pretty much laughing the whole game. Looks like Monica was taking the game seriously. MARTINA HINGIS: They both were. Can you imagine how embarrassing it is if you're the No. 1 doubles team in the world and you're behind 8-0; 6-0, 2-0. You have no chance to get a game or make something. There was this unbelievable rally when we made the first game. Okay, we're happy, we made one game. No more score 0-0. JANA NOVOTNA: I make it short (laughter). That was the long version. The short version is, when we don't laugh and when we don't have fun, we play very bad. So in order for us to play well, we need to enjoy it and have fun. That's what we started to do finally in the middle of the second set. It was almost too late, but we just made it. MARTINA HINGIS: Just made it.

Martina, can you describe the play to come back and get some measure of revenge for yesterday? MARTINA HINGIS: It's still nice to come back here and play the Grand Slam Finals in doubles. I was kind of making history today for myself. It's just nice. We were kind of sitting in the car, nobody was really happy. We're kind of so spoiled from our success we had earlier, or just me anyway with singles, you are a little disappointed. Still, when you win a Grand Slam in doubles, it is still nice, at least you have a nice trip back home. Q. Jana, your reaction to the title. JANA NOVOTNA: I am extremely happy because MARTINA HINGIS: You really look like it. JANA NOVOTNA: I'm extremely happy simply because of the reason when I started to play with Martina this year I expected to have such a great year, and we really did. And we lost only one doubles so far together this year, so pretty much unbeaten at all. It just was great to come back especially we had a tough couple of days. Martina especially losing to Lindsay, it's never easy to come back and play doubles. She was the more professional. It's pretty obvious that Lindsay was tired and she was satisfied with her singles victory. And Martina was very professional to come back and play like that. It's very hard.
