Extractions: Flushing Meadows, New York, NY September 10, 1993 S. GRAF/M. Maleeva-Fragniere AN INTERVIEW WITH MANUELA MALEEVA-FRAGNIERE Q. You were so ready in the first set. Everything you did looked great out there; where did it all go? MANUELA MALEEVA-FRAGNIERE: Well, she played better after, and, no, I was still going for my shots, but she was not making so many mistakes. It seemed like she was putting every ball, you know, just an inch over the net or an inch inside of the baseline, and it was difficult. You know, I had to make all the winners, otherwise, she was doing them, and I couldn't just play safe, because she would have been all over me, so I was going for my shots. I was a it is a bit unlucky for me, because it was so windy today because physically she's stronger than me, and it doesn't affect her game as much, where sometimes when I was against the wind, I had the feeling I had to hit the ball three times harder than usual and it took quite much out of me. Q. Manuela, do you believe in fate; and if so, do you feel like you were meant to reach the semifinals here this year?

Extractions: (6th - 12th June 2005) DFS Classic website » DFS Classic tournament organisers announced today that world number 29 Magdalena Maleeva will return to Birmingham for the fifth time to contest the trophy at the Edgbaston Priory Club, having previously won the title in 2003. The Bulgarian has won 10 WTA Tour titles in a career that began back in 1989 after turning professional at the age of 14 years old. This year has seen her add to her career doubles titles, winning her fifth with DFS Classic entrant Elena Likhovtseva in the Gold Coast and reaching two singles quarterfinals in the Gold Coast and Tokyo. Maleeva reached the career high ranking of four in the world in 1996 and made Grand Slam history with sisters Katerina and Manuela after all were seeded at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 1993. The sisters also made further tennis history by becoming the first three sisters to reach the fourth round of the same Grand Slam tournament (Roland Garros in 1993) and then repeated the feat at the 1993 US Open. All three sisters were ranked in the top 10 during their careers although never at the same time.

By the time she hit the WTA Tour at age 14 in 1989, her big sisters Manuela and Katerina had already made themselves known to the tennis world (long before anyone could recognize Venus or Serena, by the way). The two would claim a total of 31 WTA singles (Manuela 19, Katerina 12) titles in their careers. But Maggie was considered to have the most potential of the Bulgarian trio. It showed early, too. In 1992, she defeated Martina Navratilova in the 2r of the US Open en route to advancing to the QF. She was amongst the nominees for the tour's Newcomer of the Year award, and in 1993 she was named the Most Improved player. In 1994, she won her first Tier I title in Zurich.
Extractions: Since the start of the championships, doubles have been a major feature each year. But only nine times have players from a single family paired to win a national championship. In fact, only three times since 1900 has a family pair lost in a doubles final. In 1907, sisters Edna and Natalie Wildey lost the women's double final to Marie Wimer and Carrie Neely, and the year before, Margaret Johnson and her brother, J.B. Johnson, lost in the mixed final. (Even changing to non-family partners didn't help Edna Wildey, though. She was to play in five women's doubles finals without a victory - a record.) And in 1991, Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario and her brother Emilio Sanchez lost in the mixed final to Manon Bollegraf and Tom Nijssen.

Extractions: Maleeva Magdalena Maleeva is the youngest of three professional tennis sisters. Older sisters Manuela and Katerina have retired from the WTA Tour. A shoulder injury forced her off the tour for nearly a year during 1998 and 1999. Since returning to the game, she has won two tournaments, and finished 2000 ranked No. 22. Maleeva and Nadejda Petrova were double semifinalists at Sopot last year. A former member of the Bulgarian Fed Cup team, she represented her country in the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona.
