There were certainly lowered expectations when the U.S. faced Italy in the Davis Cup semifinals last weekend. Pete Sampras Andre Agassi and Michael Chang Jim Courier , a longtime Davis Cup stalwart and former No. 1 player, was left off the team. And two of the three Yanks chosen, Jan-Michael Gambill and Justin Gimelstob , were making their Davis Cup debuts, while the other member, Todd Martin , is a workaday plodder near the end of his career. Martin was 10-2 in Davis Cup singles matches before losing to Davide Sanguinetti last weekend. (David Walberg) Still, few expected the weekend to go as badly as it did. The team played with the wisdom of youth and the energy of old age. The indoor hard court was molasses-slow, which played to the Italians' advantage. The crowd support was lukewarm at best, as only a few thousand fans filled the seats of crusty Milwaukee Arena. In their biggest Davis Cup embarrassment since losing to Paraguay in 1987, the Americans fell 4-1 to an Italian team that featured no singles players in the top 35 and no doubles players in the top 100. "It was a big disappointment," said U.S. captain

Extractions: home tickets news players ... results The dream of an international tennis tournament in Miami began three decades ago, when top tennis players such as Jack Kramer, Frank Sedgman, Pancho Gonzalez, Pancho Segura and Butch Buchholz toured the country in a station wagon, playing tennis in darkened arenas and fairgrounds. It was before the days of Open tennis, and they traveled with a portable canvas court and plenty of hopes. Buchholz - an original member of the "Handsome Eight" (the first recognized pros of Lamar Hunt's World Championship Tennis Circuit introduced in 1968) - competed until he was forced to retire from tennis in 1970 with chronic tennis elbow. In 1980, when Buchholz was executive director of the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) - the player's union - he met a vice president of the Thomas J. Lipton Company who liked his idea of creating a two-week players tournament. A sponsorship agreement would eventually be reached for $1.5 million a year for five years and Lipton would own the title. The "Winter Wimbledon," as it was first dubbed, would be the first major tournament of the year (the Australian Open was then held in December). It was decided that the first tournament would be held at Laver's International Tennis Resort in Delray Beach, 50 miles north of Miami. The following year, the tournament relocated to Boca Raton followed by a move to its permanent home in Miami in 1987. Buchholz approached the ATP and Women's Tennis Association and offered prize money, a percentage of the ticket sales and worldwide television rights. In return he wanted the rights to run the tournament for 15 years. The associations agreed.

Search Other Resources Lawn tennis, as it was then known, was an Olympic sport from 1896 to 1924, although the women's singles and mixed doubles events were first played in 1900 and women's doubles wasn't added until 1920. In 1908 and 1912, there was competition both indoors and outdoors. The sport was dropped from the Olympics after 1924. It returned as a demonstration sport in 1968 and 1984 and became a medal sport again in 1988. A single-elimination tournament determines medal placings. The top 16 players are seeded in singles, the top eight teams in doubles. In 1896, 1900, 1904, 1988, and 1992, semfinal losers shared bronze medals.
