Extractions: The 2002 season has been a disappointing one for Maleeva so far, although she did well to reach the last 16 at the Australian Open, losing out to Venus Williams. But the youngest of the three Maleeva sisters (Katerina and Manuela were also once among the world's best) has readily bounced back in her career. Injuries forced her to miss much of the 1998 and 1999 seasons through varying problems but she returned to the game, winning titles in both 1999 and again last year. Was once in the world's top 10 but looks unlikely to feature there again. Latest news

Extractions: 14 - 19 June 2004 Former World No.4 Magdalena Maleeva has signed her name to one of the strongest line-up of stars set to compete in the Hastings Direct International Championships in Eastbourne, 14-19 June, 2004. Last year at Devonshire Park, Maleeva was just three games away from re-entering the World's top 10 for the first time in 7 years when she led Sylvia Farina Elia 7-5, 3-0 in the quarterfinals. Farina Elia fought back to win, and Maleeva's chance disappeared. The Bulgarian has led a fascinating career, and the story of how she became a tennis player in the first place is one of the more interesting. Inspired by her mother, Maleeva followed in the footsteps of her two older sisters - Manuela and Katerina, who were both world-class players. She first picked up a racquet as a child, and turned professional in 1989 when she was only 14. A year later as a 15-year-old, she made her Grand Slam tournament debut at the French Open in Paris, qualified, and reached the third round.
