Extractions: Martina Hingis defeated Iva Majoli, 7-6, 6-0 An Interview With MARTINA HINGIS: Q. When you are having a little trouble against Iva in a match like this, do you think back at all at Roland Garros? MARTINA HINGIS: I just played her three weeks ago in L.A. I beat her 3 and 3. It was kind of much easier than today. Actually, she made same amount of game as today, second set was much better. I was kind of very nervous in the beginning. I was up a break 4-1, still I didn't have my rhythm. I didn't feel like I controlled the game. But it was just kind of very strange coming from last night not having played and have to play next day. I don't know. I was just very nervous the first set. I was still also in the second. I kind of loosened up and everything started to go in, which I tried to do in the first set too. Q. Last few times you played her you had an easy time. She only won three games MARTINA HINGIS: Yes, 3 and 3.

Extractions: Iva Majoli took another step toward career rejuvenation last week. In 1997, she surprised the tennis world by winning Roland Garros, spoiling Martina Hingis' bid for the Grand Slam, but she hasn't been the same player since. Instead, she has battled injuries and waning confidence. In 2001, Majoli has shown flashes of her old brilliance, and last week she signaled she's ready to challenge for titles. American Meghann Shaughnessy defeated Majoli for the Bell Challenge trophy in Quebec. This photo of Iva Majoli was taken at the 2001 Ericsson Open.

Extractions: A horrendous flight delay to Miami and car rental woes didn't dull our enthusiasm for the Ericsson Open. We enjoyed five days of early round matches at the Tennis Masters Series - Miami. The grounds at Crandon Park were a resilient green despite Florida's recent drought difficulties. The knowledgeable fans continued to display their tennis mettle, and support up-and-coming talent and doubles players. The sun shone brightly, occasionally too brightly for our New York winter skin, but luckily the breezes diminished the heat considerably. And the tennis was on occasion sublime and always enjoyable. Throughout our trip, various stories and matches resonated throughout the grounds and with the fans. We offer a look at our favorite matches, the big stories (i.e. the players who stood tall) and some inside scoop. Of course, our second trip to the Ericsson Open ensured we will return for a third time next March. There is no better way to usher in spring than watching tennis at Crandon Park. This match was more exciting than the score suggests. Arnaud Clement of France and Jiri Vanek of the Czech Republic play similar games. Both are slight, quick around the court baseliners. Clement, the Australian Open finalist this year and No. 11 seed, was clearly the favorite to win and of the crowd. French fans were in full force throughout the Ericsson Open. After every point the most enthusiastic Gallic attendees shouted "Allez Arnaud".

The WTA raises it profiles from last weeks low key tournaments, although i doubt this week there will be the culinary prowess available that was evident at Sarasota. However, what is lacking in the kitchen is made up for by the quality that will be on show on the courts, with an array of stars performing this year at Charleston. The stadium itself is an impressive arena. The facilities include 17 courts for the tournament, the centre-piece being the Family Circle Stadium, which has the ability to hold over 10,000 people. The facilities are also of top standards, with the centre receiving the 2001 Public Facility of the year award from the USTA.

Extractions: ZAGREB (Reuters) Croatia's Iva Majoli, the 1997 French Open champion, announced her retirement from competitive tennis on Tuesday saying she lacked motivation. "There may be some exhibition matches or doubles, but my career is over," the 26-year-old Majoli told sports gazette Sportske Novosti "I have fallen too low," she said. "I am practically back at the beginning and would have to work like a maniac to get back to the top. I realized I was not ready for that." Majoli, who beat Swiss Martina Hingis in the 1997 Roland Garros final, was once rated as high as No. 4 but has seen her world ranking plummet to 294. The winner of eight career WTA Tour titles, including the French Open, Majoli was not at Wimbledon this year having slipped too far in the rankings, and she did not try to qualify. Majoli has played only five matches since Wimbledon 2003 and lost four of them. Allaster, who still has her previous title of Vice President of Sales and Marketing, is known throughout the tennis world for her tenacity, energy and friendly persuasiveness. Referring to these qualities, J. Wayne Richmond, executive Vice President of the ATP, Americas, jokingly called her a "female bulldog." But Allaster quickly turned the spotlight from herself and onto the superior qualities of the upcoming tournament. "Thanks to our great product, world-class hospitality, and strong media platform, we are very unique," she said. "We want to be different than other events and we want the players to come to Toronto and have a good time." Allaster announced that June 17th was the deadline for the entry list of players that will compete in the event. She also discussed the rise in associate sponsorship and outlined the progress of the new stadium project. "Our goal for a new stadium is well on its way to becoming a reality," Allaster said.

Extractions: Camerawork USA If tennis pundits were taking bets on the Sunday final, you can be assured that no one was guessing that the No. 58 ranked Majoli would face the No. 30 ranked Schnyder to contest for the championship honors. Candidates for the title seemed to be defending champion Jennifer Capriati, second-seeded Monica Seles or third-seeded Serena Williams, or even sixth-seeded French clay court artisan Amelie Mauresmo. But it was Majoli and Schnyder still standing on Sunday in the first WTA Tour Tier I final between unseeded finalists in history. Majoli became the lowest-ranked Tier I champion on the day with a 7-6 (7-5) 6-4 win in one hour, 49-minute match. The question now is can these two players, who have resurfaced to garner some attention, keep the momentum going?

Extractions: Considering that he just lost to Alex Corretja 6-3, 6-2 at the Tennis Masters Series tournament in Hamburg, Germany, Todd Martin is in a remarkably good mood. Maybe it's because he can still taste that "drown-your-sorrows cheeseburger" he had for dinner. Todd Martin says playing on clay is his greatest challenge. The subject of this conversation, on the cusp of the French Open, is clay courts and why they seem so alien to American tennis players. Martin laughs in his room at the Hotel Intercontinental. This is something he understands. Only a few hours earlier, Corretja had dismantled Martin on clay. "I was pretty impressed today," Martin says. "I was trying to attack him and turn it into a faster court. It's hard because he responds so well to it. Trying to play his game is ... torture." This is hardly an uncommon response from Americans regarding clay.
