Extractions: Monday, 7/14/97 Krajicek defends his title against strong-serving field; former Bruin visits home court By Mark Shapiro Daily Bruin Staff The lineup for the 1997 Infiniti Open is looking more and more like a big servers convention, as four of the ATP Tour's hardest servers are coming to the Los Angeles Tennis Center (LATC). Leading this quartet of cannoneers is Australia's Mark Philippoussis, who boasts the fastest serve in the world to go along with his No. 13 ranking. He will be joined by Goran Ivanisevic, who is ranked third in the world and holds the ATP record for most aces in a season. Also toeing the line will be Sweden's Thomas Enqvist, who is ranked eighth in the world and defending Open champion Richard Krajicek, who is ranked 15th. Krajicek, who hails from the Netherlands, was also Wimbledon champion in 1996. The American contingent in the draw will be led by Jim Courier and Todd Martin. Courier, a former No. 1, is ranked 29th in the world, while Martin, who has battled injury all year, is ranked 33rd. The Open will also mark the return of former Bruin Justin Gimelstob to UCLA. Gimelstob turned pro last year after spending two years with the UCLA men's tennis team.

Extractions: Monday, 7/21/97 By Mark Shapiro Daily Bruin Staff As the hardcourt tennis season heats up on the road to the U.S. Open, the professional tennis tour brings its version of the 7th Artillery to the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The Infiniti Open, which kicks off Monday on the slick LATC asphalt, has been a playground for fast servers, as past champions Pete Sampras, Boris Becker and Richard Krajicek can attest. This year, it looks more like a testing ground for rocket launching as four of the fastest servers in the world stand primed to fire. Australian Mark Philippoussis, who holds the world's record for fastest serve at 142.3 mph, is first on the list, but with his No. 13 ranking, he is not the No. 1 seed. That honor will go to Goran Ivanisevic and his 136 mph serve. Ivanisevic, who is ranked third in the world, leads the ATP Tour in match wins and service aces this year. These two will be joined by Thomas Enqvist of Sweden, who is ranked seventh in the world and boasts a 134 mph serve, and Richard Krajicek, who won the Infiniti Open last year behind his 136 mph serve. Andre Agassi, missing in action on the tour until last week, will also play. Coming off a loss last week, Agassi will be tuning up for the U.S. Open.

The US Open 2004 - Grand Slam Tennis - Official Site By IBM - News Michaella krajicek learned one of tennis key lessons early from her 1996 Wimbledon champion richard; success on court depends on how well you serve. http://2004.usopen.org/en_US/news/reports/2004-09-12/200409121095013407634.html
Extractions: Michaella Krajicek learned one of tennis' key lessons early from her older half brother, 1996 Wimbledon champion Richard; success on court depends on how well you serve. In her 6-1, 6-1 victory over American Jessica Kirkland, Krajicek cracked 11aces en route to her first junior Grand Slam title on Sunday. Krajicek, who won the 2004 US Open Girls' Doubles crown, fielded all of Kirkland's baseline blasts with the purpose and poise of a well-seasoned veteran. The real difference in the contest was Krajicek's serving prowess. The 15-year-old's delivery was so dominant that she lost just 11 points on her serve the entire match. On a searing Flushing afternoon, Krajicek steamed ahead to a 5-0 lead in the first set. A fine player in her own right, Kirkland put together a stunning combination in the sixth game that included a beautiful backhand drive down the line, and followed up nicely with a forehand winner up the line to claim her first game in the match. But Krajicek easily served out the first set. Against most opponents, Kirkland would have forced a score of errors, but against the stingy Krajicek, they were few and far between. Krajicek opened the second set with a service break and continued to hold easily, going to her serve down the middle when in need of a free point.

Extractions: IT was a dull Wimbledon, even though it signalled the dawn of a new era. Two vibrant young champions, 21-year-old Lleyton Hewitt and 20-year-old Serena Williams emerged as the superstars of the future. Top-seeded Hewitt, ranked No.1 in the world, stamped the fortnight with rare authority. He broke the classic serve-and-volley mould of former champions and dominated the tournament from the baseline. His fierce aggression is reminiscent of the great Jimmy Connors and he is the fastest player this writer has seen in five decades. Hewitt seemed like, as one of the newspapers put it, "an assassin with a mission". His one little 'wobble' during the championships occurred in the fifth set of his quarter-final encounter with the tall Dutchman Sjeng Schalken. Schalken fought back after he was down to two sets to love and his big groundshots had Hewitt scampering all over the court to level the match. In the closing stages of the final set Hewitt missed a few forehands and was visibly shaky. Pumping his fist and shouting 'Come on' at the top of his voice he found that little extra to close out the match 7-5 in the fifth. GERRY PENNY/AFP
