Extractions: NEW YORK (AP) Big-serving Dutchman Richard Krajicek and last year's French Open finalist Magnus Norman have withdrawn from the U.S. Open because of injuries. Krajicek, 29, has been sidelined for several months with an elbow injury. He is ranked 93rd in the ATP Entry System after skipping the first half of the 2001 season. Norman, 25, is out with a persistent hip injury. The 24th-ranked Swede, who reached the semifinals at Bastad in July, will undergo surgery next week that will sideline him for the rest of the season. Markus Hipfl of Austria and Mariano Zabaleta of Argentina will replace Norman and Krajicek in the main draw.

Extractions: Few players could consistently beat former Wimbledon champion Richard Krajicek on grass, but in the end a nagging elbow injury proved to be the unbeatable foe as the Dutchman called it a career this week at the ATP grasscourt stop in 's-Hertogenbosch, just days before the start of The Championships at the All-England Club. "I want to have the feeling that I can win," Krajicek said, holding back tears not long after suffering through the familiar elbow pain in a loss to the unheralded Olivier Mutis. "But if my arm starts to hurt after a few service games, that's not realistic. That's why I've decided to stop. I achieved more and reached higher in the world ranks than I had ever dreamed as a child."

Mischa pulled out a 7-6 in the third win yesterday so must be pooped. If she is alert and mobile, she should challenge Asagoe. For Michaella, make sure you attack her serve. For Shinobu, engage Krajicek in long rallies and tire her out before utilising your stamina. Matt's Pick: I would LOVE to see a Krajicek-Ivanovic showdown but that's unlikely. The Japanese veteran will tire out the Dutch wonder child 6-4 6-1.

Extractions: R ichard Krajicek will always be remembered for two reasons: his Wimbledon triumph in 1996, when he became the only man in an eight-year period to beat Pete Sampras at the grass court Grand Slam, and his (in)famous comment on women's tennis. "I may have exaggerated a bit when I said that 80 per cent of the top 100 women are fat pigs. What I meant to say was 75 per cent of the top 100 women are fat pigs," he had said in 1992. Later he apologized for the comment, but the tag had stuck. The Dutchman, who retired from competitive tennis is 2003 is in Mumbai to promote the ABN AMRO Tennis Challenge, a tournament that will award the winner a wild card entry to the 2005 ABN AMRO World Tennis tournament in Rotterdam. Senior correspondent Ashish Magotra caught up the 32-year-old winner of 17 ATP singles titles. After your triumph at Wimbledon in 1996, things did not go very well considering the plethora of injuries you suffered. Were the injuries the first and foremost reason that made you quit the game? From '96 till around '99 things were still going okay. I won a couple of tournaments and even reached number four in the world, which is my highest ranking. But in 2000, the injuries really started to kick in and my elbow gave a lot of problems. At the end of the year I had to take 20 months off before I could come back into the game.

The 31-year-old Dutchman struggled with his serve throughout the match and hit as many as 13 double faults. Following the post-match press conference, the 1996 Wimbledon champion pulled out of Wimbledon citing his persistent elbow injury. Two other Frenchmen were successful in Tuesday's action. No. 7 seed Arnaud Clement who reached the semifinals in Halle last week, scored a 6-2, 6-3 win over Dutch wild card Fred Hemmes Jr to advance to round two. His good friend and last week's Stella Artois Championships runner-up Sebastien Grosjean ousted German qualifier Philipp Petzschner 6-2, 5-7, 6-3. Roland Garros finalist and Dutch sensation Martin Verkerk held three match points against Lars Burgsmuller in his first ever match on grass. However, the German turned things around in the third set tiebreak and eventually took home the match 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(11). Verkerk captured his career-first ATP title in Milan in the beginning of the season and made his debut at the Ordina Open today.

The 31-year-old played his last ATP match on Tuesday at the Ordina Open in 's-Hertogenbosch, where he was defeated by Frenchman OLIVIER MUTIS in the first round. "It's very difficult for me to put into words what I'm feeling right now because it means the definite end of my tennis career, which I started a long time ago when I was three years old," Krajicek said at a press conference from 's-Hertogenbosch. "At my press conference after my last match here in s-Hertogenbosch, I said I would go on until after the US Open, but deep in my heart I knew the end was there, but it was impossible for me to say it." During his career, which began in 1989, Krajicek collected 17 titles, including the Wimbledon trophy in 1996. His most recent titles were earned in 1999, when he won in London and the Tennis Masters Series in Miami. He reached a career-high No. 4 in 1999 and won at least one title for nine straight years from 1991-99. He also finished in the Top 20 for eight straight years from 1992-99.

It is the contextual portrait, by Richard Evans, of a complex institution set within the larger frameworks of sport and this century's great events and dynamics. Dwight Davis's annual challenge cup has proved to be the catalyst for tennis's entrance onto the international stage and it remains a significant force to this day. Evans charts both the cup's influence on the evolution of international tennis as well as the sporting, social and political storms which have buffeted the development of the Davis Cup ever since.

As the depth of competition continues to increase on both the ATP and WTA tours, seeded players don't advance with nearly as much certainty as they did twenty years ago, but this year's Australian Open has proven especially unpredictable. On the women's side, the highest seed out thus far is #5, Nathalie Tauziat, who might have been expected to benefit from the fast court conditions, given her history of success at Wimbledon. The next fallen seed, #7, Amelie Mauresmo, was last year's runner-up to Martina Hingis. Amanda Coetzer (8), and Dominique Van Roost (14), also failed to reach the third round. Van Roost fell to one of the players attracting extra attention this year, Jennifer Capriati , whose comeback effort has raised her ranking from #112 to #21 in the last seven months.
