As play in Melbourne concluded and Marat and Serena took home their respective titles, I started wondering something. I wonder how their year will play out? This question will take shape in this article as I discuss the past and present fortunes and disadvantages of players doing well Down Under. Enjoy. The One that Got Away What do Martina Navratilova, Mary Joe Fernandez, and Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario have in common? Melbourne was the title that in some way eluded them or ruined their year. Let's start off with the Czech-born American, Martina Navratilova. Martina had an illustrious career that is still writing chapters today. Martina only played in Melbourne 10 times over her career and she never lost before the quarterfinals. She won on three occasions: '81 over Evert Lloyd, '83 over Kathy Jordan, and '85 over Chrissie again. The year that stands out most for Martina and tennis fans was the '84 campaign. Navratilova had beaten Chrissie in all three Grand Slam finals that year and look destined to meet her for the last Slam in Australia (held in December). Sadly, Martina was devastated after a 7-5 in the third set loss to Helena Sukova. That was only Martina's second match loss of the year, but she will remember 1984 as, "the year that a Grand Slam in Melbourne was stolen from me."

Advanta Tennis Championships For those playing Philadelphia tennis trivia games, write this down. Jana Novotna (96), anke huber (94) and Conchita Martinez (93) round out the http://www.advantachampionships.com/history.html
Extractions: Lindsay Davenport has also found the Main Line area to be a friendly one for her game. Davenport made four consecutive trips to the finals from 1997 to 2000. The talented Californian had to settle for runner-up status in 1997 and 1998, losing the finals to Martina Hingis and Steffi Graf. Davenport finally broke through in 1999 and 2000, defeating Hingis both times in the finals to become only the second player in tournament history to defend her singles title (Evert won in 1977 and 1978). The WTA Tour moved the Philadelphia event out of the country for two years before the Advanta Championships finally returned in 2003. For tennis fans in the Main Line area, it was a welcome return. For Amelie Mauresmo, it was the exclamation point on her best season ever as she outlasted Anastasia Myskina in a three-set final to win her first Advanta title.
