Extractions: Most of my friends call me JL. short for John Laffnie. I began playing tennis at the age of 5 and I went onto win the under 12 age group at the Rolex in Port Washington. My inspiration came from Bjorn Borg, from this although I played many other sports. Tennis was the one for me. I am a sports fanatic and love rugby (Western Province - Stormers), and cricket. In 1994 I wanted to give something back to the game and I started the John-Laffnie De Jager Junior development squad. To encourage kids to play tennis and have fun. In 1994 I started a tennis magazine called Match Point. There are now over 20 tournaments in all areas of South Africa. JL was born on St Patrick's Day 17th March 1973 in Johannesburg South Africa. He went to Ermelo High School. John lives in Ermelo in the Transvaal area of South Africa, when he is not on the tour. JL stands an impressive 6' 4' (1.9m). JL is a right-handed player and turned professional in 1992. He was a very good junior singles and doubles player. He quickly found he had a gift in being able to play a very good doubles game. It was no surprise that with Karim Alami won the US Open Junior doubles title in 1991 and also had senior wins with Byron Talbot in Madeira and in Jerusalem with Christo van Rensburg. The most memorable match was at Wimbledon this year when JL and his playing partner David Adams defeated Ellis Ferreira and Rick Leach in the Quarter finals in an epic match that should have been seen on Centre court. 6-7, 6-7, 7-6, 7-6, 8-6. It is the first time that a match has gone to four tie-break sets and an extended set in the fifth. At least Paul Haarhuis said so. JL's worst match was in the under 12 category at the Orange Bowl when Tommy Ho beat him love and love.

Extractions: The fireman's daughter, Billie Jean Moffitt King began blazing through the tennis world in 1960 when she first appeared in women's rankings at No, 4. She was 17. For more than two decades she continued as a force in the game as the all-time Wimbledon champion, frequently the foremost player, a crusader in building the female professional game and a million-dollar-plus winner on the tour. Born November 22, 1943, in Long Beach, CA, Billie Jean, a 5-foot-41/2, 130-pound right-hander, was named for her father, Bill Moffitt, a Long Beach fireman and an enthusiastic athlete, though not a tennis player. Her brother, Randy Moffitt, became a pitcher for the San Francisco Giants. She developed on the public courts of Long Beach and first gained international recognition in 1961 by joining 18-year-old Karen Hantze for a surprising triumph in the Wimbledon women's doubles. They were the youngest team to win it. That was the first of 20 Wimbledon championships, making King the record winner of the most prestigious tourney.

The Sydney experience promises to be totally different. Indeed, and touch a boomerang, it appears impossible to get lost this time. Tennis was missing from the Olympic Games from 1924 to 1968 when it was resurrected as a demonstration sport amidst the fumes and rarified air of Mexico City. There was then a further 16 year gap before the sport again re-appeared on a demonstration basis in Los Angeles - Sweden's Stefan Edberg and Germany's Steffi Graf winning the ersatz gold medals.
