Tennis Masters Cup Doubles The first doubles teams to qualify for the Tennis Masters Cup Houston are Bob and Mike Bryan, Mark Knowles-Daniel Nestor, US Open champions Jonas Bjorkman-Todd Woodbridge (pictured) and Mahesh Bhupathi-Max Mirnyi. The Bryans failed to win their second Grand Slam title of the year when they were beaten by veterans Bjorkman-Woodbridge in the US Open final. Bjorkman and Woodbridge have become the first team to win Wimbledon and the US Open in the same year since Woodbridge and Mark Woodforde in 1996. The unstoppable Woodbridge has now 77 career doubles titles one short of equaling the record 78 titles held by Tom Okker. A total of eight teams will qualify for the Tennis Masters Cup in Houston. This is the first time since 1985 that the singles and doubles year-end championships will be held at the same venue.

Each draw enjoyed plenty of exciting play, but the women's singles was arguably the best. In the final, which Serena took 6-3, 7-6(4) over Martina Hingis, Serena gave an awesome display of power and speed against a Hingis who fought hard despite seeming less than fully recovered from her semifinal battle with Venus Williams. That was at least as good a match as the final, with Hingis needing three sets, 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, to defeat Venus. The other semi was a dramatic slugfest, with Serena overcoming defending champion Lindsay Davenport 6-4, 1-6, 6-4. Preceding these excellent semis were two close, top-quality quarterfinals, Serena vs. Monica Seles and especially Davenport vs. Mary Pierce. While Serena Williams was a somewhat surprising champion, Andre Agassi was the clear favorite from the second day of the tournament, when both the defending champion, Patrick Rafter, and top seed, Pete Sampras, withdrew due to injuries. Unlike Andre, who had a fairly easy time in his half of the draw, Todd Martin barely survived both the first and the fourth rounds, where he came through two incredibly tough five-set battles. The heroic level of effort Martin showed to make it to the final did not diminish in the final itself. The underdog Martin took Agassi to five sets, 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-7 (2), 6-3, 6-2, before Andre's unequaled returning ability, combined with surprisingly strong serving, proved too much. Andre Agassi now has the world number one ranking.

The top team on the men's tour is comprised of two "who-dat?"s that failed to make the main singles draw of the U.S. Open. One is ranked No. 180 in singles and didn't qualify. His partner is ranked a hard-on-the-eyes 301 and didn't bother trying to go solo. Still, put them on the same side of the net and, quite simply, they're magicians. The coming together of Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi their third coming, in fact augurs well for Indias Olympic hopes. If theres any sport in which India aims a sure shot at Athens, its tennis. Leander and Mahesh have reinforced this belief after they lifted the $ 2.5-million ATP Masters title in Toronto recently. Though they fell at the quarter-final stage of the ATP tournament at Cincinatti a few days later, the Indian pair made it loud and clear, for their critics to hear, that they had begun their Olympic preparation in right earnest. Both Geminians, Leander and Mahesh, separated by just a year in age (Leander is 73 born and Mahesh 74), seem to strike up amazing wavelength and rapport whenever they reunite, after long separations. Extractions: Mar. 6, 2005 Leander Paes and Mahesh Bhupathi won the doubles tie as India continued their domination over China to take an unassailable 3-0 lead in their Davis Cup Asia Oceania Group I encounter here today and book a berth in the next round. After Harsh Mankad gave India a 1-0 lead on the opening day yesterday, Prakash Amritraj made it 2-0 with a straight set win over Wang Yu earlier today before Paes and Bhupathi completed the scoreline with a win over Yu and Zhu Ben-Qiang in the doubles rubber. Prakash played near flawless tennis to thrash Yu 6-3 6-4 6-2 in the second singles match which had to be completed today after rain halted play yesterday. Paes and Bhupathi then struggled a bit but their experience proved too much for Yu and Qiang as the Indians registered the win, 7-6 (13/11) 6-3 3-6 6-1, in two hours and 45 minutes. India, who had earlier defeated China in 1997 and 2001, would now meet the winner of the match between Indonesia and Uzbekistan for a place in the World Group play off. The Chinese, with little experience on playing on grass, never looked comfortable against the Indians and surrendered rather meekly in the singles but did put up a fight in the doubles with their left-right combination of Yu and Zhu. The dead reverse singles, which will pit Amritraj against Peng and Mankad versus Yu tomorrow, would be best of three affairs now.
