People also should have strong swimming skills in a variety of other water-based activities, including competitive diving fishing , jet-skiing, rowing sailing , and waterskiing Swimming is a valuable activity for physical therapy and exercise. Because it works the majority of the muscles in the body and provides both aerobic benefits and resistance benefits (as the swimmer pulls and pushes through the water), the sport is generally considered one of the most complete forms of exercise. Swimming does not strain joints and connective tissue as much as many other forms of exercise, and swimmers injure themselves at a lower rate than most other athletes. Athletes in other sports who are recovering from injuries often swim to stay in shape.

Extractions: PREPARATION FOR THE 1996 OLYMPIC GAMES First and most importantly, this article is based on the preparation of one individual, and is the opinion of one coach. I would suggest that you read this piece with the understanding that it was successful for a 23 year old female athlete, and might not work for other athletes.... especially those athletes considered to developmental in nature. After this exhaustive review, it is the author's opinion that this athlete's preparation could have been better, and still has many areas of improvement. For the most part I enjoy writing. Since this article isn't written for peer review, I have taken a few liberties with the English language. I have a hard time being serious all the time when writing, so don't get too carried away with the few "tongue in cheek" comments. Amy is one of those athletes who races with one personality, and lives life with another. As a racer she hates to lose, and performs best when she puts her mind to winning the race for her own personal reasons. She has an attitude behind the blocks that to a rookie might be disturbing, but regardless of whether it does or doesn't distract the competition, it's in a way her "mantra". All the coughing, clapping, snorting, and glares are as much to prepare herself as to intimidate, and are a significant part of her success story.
