Extractions: ATHENS, Greece. August 16. AUSSIE world record-holder Ian Thorpe has waited four years for this moment, a chance to turn the tables on his archrival, Dutchman Pieter van den Hoogenband. On his home waters in Sydney, Thorpe went into this race as world record-holder and a hot favourite only to be ambushed by the flying Dutchman who took the race out hard and left the Aussie in his wake.

Extractions: Human beings were swimming at a time when Australia was the exclusive domain of Aborigines. Yet, in terms of a modern sport that provided the world with Hollywood's Tarzan, Buck Rogers and Flash Gordon, the staging of the Olympic events in Sydney will mark swimming's homecoming. No other nation on earth is as passionate or knowledgeable about swimming. Walk down any beach there or stroll into a shop in a sleepy village, and you can strike up a conversation about the sport, its stars, even its politics - in the same way that you might do the same over football in Europe. Make it big in swimming in Australia, and you are made for life. Ask Kieren Perkins, winner of the 1,500 metres freestyle in Barcelona and Atlanta. Now attempting to make his third Olympic Games and earn selection to an Australia team that is likely to be headed by Ian Thorpe, 17, in Sydney, Perkins is a millionaire with his own TV show. Thorpe will be guaranteed the same level of riches if he hits the jackpot in the Homebush pool as Australia battle with the United States for supremacy of the sport.

Summer Olympics 2000 Australia's 'Thorpedo' Swimming For Gold SYDNEY, Australia ian thorpe finishes his warmdown laps and floats to the But the swimmer nicknamed thorpedo doesn t take himself too seriously. http://espn.go.com/oly/summer00/swimming/s/2000/0816/688228.html
Extractions: SYDNEY, Australia Ian Thorpe finishes his warm-down laps and floats to the edge of the pool. Two girls standing in his lane continue their chat, ignoring Thorpe's arrival. A friend approaches the pool and puts his right foot on Thorpe's head, playfully pushing him underwater for a moment. Is this any way to treat a guy favored to win at least three gold medals at the Sydney Olympics, a teenager called "swimmer of the century" two years ago by the Australian national coach? If Michael Jordan walked into a gym in any U.S. city, guys playing pickup hoops would stop and gape. But when Thorpe swam with a bunch of high schoolers recently at a community pool, there was little hubbub. He sat on the floor, a towel wrapped around his waist, overlooked by passers-by as he chatted with buddies before a race. The 17-year-old Thorpe holds world records in the 200-meter and 400-meter freestyle events and is the Olympic favorite in both races. He also will swim on Australia's 800-meter freestyle relay, which holds the world record, and on the 400-meter relay that is a medal contender. He already is an Australian hero, and winning gold medals in Sydney would make him an even bigger superstar in a nation devoted to the sport.
Thorpedo Scorches The Pool The classy Aussie, ian thorpe, is all smiles as he holds his medals six golds 42 from swimming alone and this was further boosted by its women divers, http://www.sportstaronnet.com/tss2533/25330560.htm
Extractions: COMMONWEALTH GAMES/AQUATICS THE tickets for the swimming events of the 17th Commonwealth Games - quite literally - were the hottest in Manchester. For, simply, it was party time down at the pool what with the classy Ian Thorpe in the thick of things and coming up with an awesome display. The 19-year-old uncorked a remarkable show as he worked his way to a record haul of six golds and a silver, though personally the failure to deliver the promised seven golds should have been a big body blow to the genial swimmer. AP The classy Aussie, Ian Thorpe, is all smiles as he holds his medals - six golds and one silver. All eyes were trained on this Aussie, already acknowledged as the greatest swimmer of our times, as he went business-like in his pursuit to glory. The mission to charter into the same territory hitherto crossed by the one and only Mark Spitz, at the Munich Olympics 30 years ago, saw him start off his campaign with a new world record in his pet 400m freestyle event and continue until compatriot Matt Welsh stopped it suddenly on the tracks in the 100m backstroke. Otherwise, it was a faultless and memorable campaign for Thorpe who became the first male swimmer in the history of the Games to win the 100m, 200m and 400m freestyle titles and the third swimmer to win six golds at a single Commonwealth Games after Canada's Graham Smith (1978) and compatriot Susan O'Neill (1998). Thorpe, after his rich haul in Manchester, is now also the proud record holder of an aggregate 10 golds (including the four he won in Kuala Lumpur four years ago) in the men's section, surpassing the nine golds achieved by English fencer, Bill Hoskyns, and fellow Australian swimmer, Mike Wenden.
Extractions: by RedEaredPanda Sydney was the home to the Olympic's in 2000. Most of the venues were especially built for the events. It was a very international city for 2 weeks. There were tourist and athleats from all over the world. You would walk around Darling Harhour and you would hear all the different accents. It was wonderful. I attended some sporting events. As you can imagin it was packed with people and was a very hot day. I went to see Equestrian and weight lifting. ( that was the only tickets available at the door) :)

This first world water extravaganza in North America is back from the dead after the International Swimming Federation pulled it out of Montreal for lack of sponsors last January and after the death of its chief organizer, Yvon Desrochers. With 2,300 athletes and coaches from 160 countries taking part in swimming, diving, water polo, synchronized swimming and open-water swimming, it will be the largest multisport event to hit Montreal since the Olympics in 1976. The open-water swimming will be held at the Olympic rowing basin. It promises to be a tour de force by the world's greatest individual swimmer, six-time Olympic champ Michael Phelps of the United States; the powerful Australian swim team, led by freestyler Grant Hackett; and the Chinese divers, readying for the Beijing Olympics in 2008.
