'Bittersweet' Record For Thompson - Aquatics - MSNBC.com jenny thompson of the US swims the butterfly leg in Saturday s 400meter medleyrelay. Aquatics (swimming, diving, water polo) Section Front http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5782796/
Extractions: NBCSports.com news services ATHENS, Greece - With her silver medal Saturday in the women's 400-meter medley relay, Jenny Thompson became the most decorated U.S. Olympian of all time with 12 medals, breaking a tie with swimmers Mark Spitz and Matt Biondi and shooter Carl Osburn. She also now ranks second all-time among female Olympic medalists, behind only Larissa Latynina of the former USSR and her 18 gymnastics medals. But the records seemed rather empty for the four-time Olympian. The 31-year-old Thompson couldn't hold on in the butterfly when given a lead by Natalie Coughlin (backstroke) and Amanda Beard (breaststroke), who covered the first 200 under world-record pace.
Extractions: INDIANAPOLIS - Jenny Thompson is ready to trade in the pool for a career in medicine. The 31-year-old swimmer, who owns an American-best career total of 12 Olympic medals, will retire after the World Short Course Championships in the same city where her international career began in 1987. Thompson quit once before, after the 2000 Olympics. This time, she means it. "Time has just flown by," she said. "I think about it and I'm like, 'Wow, 10 years ago I was doing the same thing and maybe I should do something else for a change.' I keep on telling my friends, 'I need a new hobby."' In 1987, Thompson was a 14-year-old competing in the Pan American Games, winning two golds and a bronze. Katie Hoff hadn't been born; Hoff, now 15, was a teammate of Thompson's in Athens and is swimming in this week's meet. "She reminded me a lot of myself when I was at my very first international meet," Thompson said. "She's just really young and cute. I don't know if I was cute, but I was probably obnoxious and naive."

Extractions: (Valley News Jennifer Hauck) Hanover Parkhurst Hall, scene of the ROTC riots of the '60s and the divestiture rallies of the '80s, was awash in protest again yesterday. After a short gathering across the street on the college green, nearly 600 students stormed the administration's headquarters at noon demanding that college officials reinstate the school's swimming and diving teams, which the administration said would be cut at the end of this season. Since the college announced the swimming and diving cuts, which are part of a larger cost-saving effort, on Nov. 25, the students have been mobilizing and protesting the action. A Web site has been set up, a letter-writing campaign initiated, protest rallies organized and an eBay account set up to sell the swim program to a corporate sponsor. But those efforts had thus far failed to shake the administration's resolve, which brought the students to Parkhurst Hall and the door of the president yesterday.

The following 14 swimmers comprise the largest group of U.S. swimmers over 30 ever to set their sights on making Olympic Trials. Their prospects range from a virtual lock to a six-time Trials veteran to a 44-year-old grandmother. As we learn more about the human body, physical limits seem to melt away. "I bought into the notion that you had to stop what you were doing to get on with your life," says Byron Davis. "In the last two-and-a-half years, I've realized that swimming will always be a part of my life."
