Nov. 22, 2004 by Jesse Hulsing The University of Washington provides a diverse educational experience. Students hail from far-away places such as China, Chile and in the case of Husky swimmer Bruno Barbic , Croatia. "If I stayed and went to college in Croatia, then I wouldn't be able to swim as much as I do here," Barbic says. "Swimming and going to college is basically impossible, because there are no college sports." The fact that he wouldn't be able to swim while at college pushed Barbic towards the United States, and eventually to the University of Washington. When Barbic lifted off from Zagreb International Airport, he had no idea that he was traveling more than just the 5,523 miles printed on his itinerary from the language, to the people, to the food, Croatia and Seattle are entire worlds apart.

Extractions: Aquatics Water Polo Womens water polo was one of the new events at the Sydney Games. When one plays water polo, the players are prohibited from touching the bottom or side of the pool. There are four seven-minute quarters, and water polo players may swim up to five kilometers in a single game. One must have the endurance and technique of a wonderful swimmer, a football players skill in passing, dribbling and shooting for a goal, and a rugby players strength to battle for the ball. Water polo started as the aquatic version of rugby. It began in the mid-1800s in England, before it started evolving into an aquatic resemblance of football (soccer). It had become so popular in Europe and North America, that it became an Olympic sport in the Olympic Games in Paris. Tall and long-armed athletes excel in this sport because 85 percent of the body is under water. The body is also about 85 percent submerged with all of the grabbing, holding, kicking, wrestling, and yanking of bathing suits, which makes the game even tougher. Only eight teams qualify in the womens division, while twelve teams compete in the mens division at the Olympic Games.

Phelps Sets New Standard For Swimming Spitz set the benchmark for Olympic swimming by winning seven gold medals a host of other great champions including alexander popov and Jenny Thompson. http://www.rediff.com/sports/2004/aug/30oly-swim.htm
Extractions: Swimming went more than three decades before discovering someone to better the Olympic records set by Mark Spitz, but the wait to find a challenger to the mark set by Michael Phelps could last another century. Spitz set the benchmark for Olympic swimming by winning seven gold medals at the 1972 Munich Games but Phelps raised the bar even higher in Athens. The American teenager, unrivalled as the star of the pool in Athens, won eight medals, including six golds, to match Soviet gymnast Alexander Dityatin's 1980 record for the most medals at one Games. He had been promised $1 million if he could equal Spitz by winning seven golds but he could potentially earn 50 times that amount after creating his own legacy. "I just wanted to be the first Michael Phelps," he explained. Phelps, 19, won individual medley and both butterfly finals as well as two relay golds. He got a bronze in the 200 freestyle behind Ian Thorpe and Pieter van den Hoogenband and another in the 4x100 freestyle relay surprisingly won by South Africa. He broke his own world record to win the 400 individual medley, the first of the 32 finals, and was still going strong at the end, beating his team mate and world record holder Ian Crocker in the 100 butterfly final.
