Extractions: Decisions No Decision Yet Narrow Relief ... Two World Cups less, two contracts more Franziska makes her biggest decisions subsequent to Olympic Games. After the Atlanta Games 1996 she left school and engaged a new coach, and now after Sydney she presents her new love: Stefan Kretzschmar, member of the national handball team and presenter of an MTV show. When they met at Sydney, both had experienced a bitter athletic defeat, so they understood each other immediately. Inspired by her new love Franziska decided to continue her swimming career. "I want to demonstrate that I am able to do better than I did in Sydney. The fire in me that I had expected to go out if I had reached my goals in Sydney is still burning." In January she will resume her regular training with coach Gerd Esser. Greatest goal in 2001 are the World Championships in Fukuoka (Japan). After her post-olympic diving vacation at the Maledives - from which she returned with both eardrums injured - Franziska confirmed that she has not decided yet whether she will continue her swimming career. She still feels "a fire burning inside". In her decision she doesn't want to be influenced by others.

(719-866-3588) // December 4, 2002 "Aiming for Athens" has been a motto of sorts for the swimming community since the conclusion of Team USA's dominance down under in 2000. This year's US Open will stay in line with that theme as more than 500 athletes will swim at the Olympic distance (lcm) for the first time at the US Open since 1999. The meet kicks off on Thursday, December 5, concluding on the 7th. Also falling in the "Aiming for Athens" category is Misty Hyman, who is slated to compete in her first major meet since the 2000 Olympic games where she upset heavily-favored Susie O'Neill to win the 200m fly and break the Aussie's six-year winning streak. Hyman, who took time off for shoulder rehab and much-needed rest following Sydney, is entered in the 100m back and the 100m fly as well as her signature event, the 200m fly. Though Hyman is the American record-holder in the event, she should be considered the underdog thanks to a grueling recovery and slow comeback. Still, how Hyman competes at the Open will be an indication of her progress toward Athens.

(Getty Images) Posted: Sunday, August 15, 2004 . 04:14:24 (AEST) Australia's gun women's 4x100m freestyle relay team has won Australia's second gold medal at the Olympic Games in Athens, breaking the world record and becoming the first Australian women to capture gold in the event since 1956 in the process. The team of Alice Mills, world record holder Libby Lenton, Petria Thomas and Jodie Henry clocked 3 minutes 35.94 seconds, breaking the record by six one-hundredths of a second. The United States team of Kara Lynn Joyce, Natalie Coughlin, Amanda Weir and Jenny Thompson took silver in 3:36.39, while bronze went to the Netherlands in 3:37.59. Thompson, 31, had anchored the United States to victory in the event in the past three Olympics. But Thompson, whose 10 Olympic medals include eight relay golds, couldn't hold off the 22-year-old Olympic debutante.
