Two nights later, the Australian foursome of Welsh (back, 50.95), Jim Piper (breast, 59.44), Geoff Huegill (fly, 50.61) and Ashley Callus (free, 47.12) smashed the world record for the 4 x 100 meter medley relay. The Bid from the Australian Commonwealth Games Association (ACGA) for Melbourne to host the Year 2006 Commonwealth Games was formally lodged in London by Bid Chairman, Ron Walker on the closing date, 9 April 1999. With the withdrawal of the city of Wellington (New Zealand) in March, Melbourne is the sole contender for the 2006 Games. Mike Fennell, President of the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has said the decision to award the Games to tbe Australian city should only be a formality, with the decision to be ratified in Fiji in October at the CGP General Assembly. Underwritten by the Victorian Government and led by the Premier, Jeff Kennett, the Melbourne Bid Committee has been working since early 1996. The dedication and professional work of the Bid Committee and staff made Melbourne an early favourite and prospective opposition bids did not proceed. Jeff Kennett hailed the outcome "as a great win for Victoria ... Melbourne will host the most successful, most professional and best attended Games in Commonwealth history".

Thomas, who was inducted into the AIS Swimming Hall of Fame in 1996, emerged from the shadow of retired Australian swimming champion Susie O'Neill last year to become the world's number-one butterfly swimmer. The 26-year-old won three gold medals at each of the World, Australian Short Course and National Championships. It was also an outstanding year for Rizzo, who created history at the 2001 World Championships in Belgium by becoming the first Australian gymnast to win a world championship medal. Rizzo scored an incredible 9.725 on the high bars to win silver. He also won gold medals at the World Student Games and the Goodwill Games. The Australian Women's Rowing Four, comprising four AIS scholarship holders, was named Team of the Year. In an outstanding performance, the crew of Jane Robinson, Victoria Roberts, Julia Wilson and Joanna Lutz not only won gold in the Women's Fours at the World Championships in Switzerland, but the same four rowers were also part of the victorious Australian Women's Eight. Representing Senator Kemp at the AIS awards ceremony, the Member for Eden-Monaro, Mr Gary Nairn, said 2001 had been an exceptional year for the AIS.
