Extractions: June 2001 2002 GAMES - An English garden party or a case of "The Empire Strikes Back?" All indications suggest that, in Manchester, Australia will face a major challenge to its dominance of the Commonwealth Games established in the 1990s at Auckland, Victoria, and Kuala Lumpur. The challenge will come from England which decided in 1997 that their number one objective at the 2002 Commonwealth Games is to TOP THE MEDAL TALLY, something England consistently did in the Games held prior to 1990 in Auckland. There has always existed a traditional Australian/English sporting rivalry not only in the Commonwealth Games but in many sports. In Manchester in 2002 it is being predicted that the mother country will put the 'upstart colonials" back in their place just as it hopes to do in the Ashes Tests and the British Lions tour this year!!! Heptathlon Champion The 2002 Games will be the largest multi-sports event to be held in England, and it is only the second time the Games have been held in the country - the last being in London in 1934. 2002 is the Queen's silver jubilee year and the hosts plan a huge celebration which they want to see extended to the sporting arena.

Extractions: University at Buffalo head men's swimming and diving coach Budd Termin has been selected to receive the prestigious State University of New York Chancellor's Award for Excellence in Professional Service. The award, instituted in 1977, provides "SUNY-wide recognition for superlative performance and outstanding achievement by professional service employees." Termin was nominated to receive the award by Judith Adams-Volpe, Co-Chair of the Intercollegiate Athletics Board, for his unique approach to coaching based upon his research on the biomechanics of swimming and the development of a patented training system. Recipients of the Chancellor's Award must be serving in full-time professional capacities with more than half of their assignment in non-teaching services, and they must have completed at least three years of continuous full-time professional service in that position. They are described as individuals "who embody SUNY's highest standards and who inspire and serve as role models for the entire university community," and "who have repeatedly sought improvement of themselves, their campuses and ultimately the State University and in so doing, have transcended the normal definitions of excellence." Termin undoubtedly fits those descriptions based upon his 14-year history of outstanding athletic and scientific achievements at UB.
