March 26, 1998 AUBURN, Ala. - Stanford University's 200 yard freestyle relay team set American, U.S. Open and NCAA records en route to a first-place finish at the NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championships on Thursday in Auburn, Alabama. The team of Anthony Robinson, Sabir Muhammad, Justin Ewers and Scott Claypool touched the wall in 1:16.76 to shatter the previous American, U.S. Open and NCAA mark of 1:16.93 set by Stanford in 1994. Stanford won three of the six events in the first day of the three-day competition to take a 29-point lead into Friday. The Cardinal has 183 points, followed by defending national champion Auburn (154), Texas (129), Tennessee (82) and Arizona (64). "We exceeded expectations today," Stanford head coach Skip Kenney said. "I sort of feel like a basketball coach who is up by 10 points at the half. I feel good, but we have a long way to go.

Extractions: April 6, 1998 Stanford captured the team title at the 75th annual Division I Men's Swimming and Diving Championships March 26-28 at Auburn. The Cardinal scored 599 points to beat the host Tigers (3941/2) and Texas (3621/2). Stanford captain Tom Wilkens (with teammate Blake Holden) led a one-two finish for the Cardinal in the 200 breaststroke and also swept the two individual medley events. Junior Matthew Pierce and freshman Steven Brown also finished one-two for the Cardinal in the 200 butterfly, and junior Tate Blahnik edged world champion Lenny Kryzelburg of Southern California in the 200-yard backstroke, 1:41.21 to 1:41.55. Stanford capped its victory with a narrow win over Texas in the 400-yard freestyle relay. Skip Kenney, who has coached seven of Stanford's eight NCAA men's championship teams, was proud that all of his swimmers managed to make the championship final in all 18 swimming events. "This has exceeded everything I expected from this team. We had great leadership from our upperclassmen and the freshman did a great job," Kenney said. Individually, Arizona's Ryk Neethling won three events the 200-, 500- and 1,650-yard freestyles. His 14:32.50 time in the 1,650 was the second fastest ever in the championships, trailing only Tom Dolan's record 14.29.31 time in 1995.

Extractions: Fast as Skin Be wo years ago, the Duke swimming and diving teams arrived at the ACC Championship meet, walked in, and realized something was not right: Most of the other swimmers were wearing what appeared to be wetsuits. "We were like, 'Oh no, we're in trouble here,' " says Lauren Hancock, a junior. "'They've got the Fastskins.' " Fastskins in action: suitable for competition photo: Jon Gardiner The Speedo Fastskin is a paradox of sorts. It is the most technologically advanced swimsuit in the world, and yet, in design, it is a return to nature. The Fastskin does things, so Speedo claims, that our skin cannot. "It replicates the most microscopic processes of sharkskin," says Craig Brommer, vice president of marketing at Speedo. "It does exactly what theirs does." Hancock had good reason to worry. The Duke teams were wearing the Speedo Aquablade, regarded by most as the next-best thing. But, in her senior year of high school, Hancock had bought her own Fastskin. "You can see the water bead up and shoot off it. And when you put it on, it squeezes your muscles around," she says. "We were at a huge disadvantage that day."
