In front of the home crowd, the men's team rallied past North Carolina on the final day of competition to finish third, for just the second time in program history, with 429 points. That made five consecutive finishes in the top five for the Aqua Jacket men at the conference meet. Junior Sam Morgan captured his first ACC title at the men's ACC meet and went on to earn All-America honors at the NCAA Championships with a 14th-place finish in the 1650 free, leading the men to a 32nd-place finish. On the women's side, Baron tutored Tech's first ACC champion, Vesna Stojanovska, in the 200 butterfly. Stojanovska went on to earn All-ACC honors with a runner-up finish in the 200 freestyle and Elizabeth Stowe finished third in the 1650 free to garner All-ACC honors to lead Tech to a program-best 286.5 points and a sixth-place finish. Tech had two swimmers earn all-conference honors at the same meet for the first time since the inception of the women's program in 2001-02.

Their time of 3 minutes, 30.68 seconds was almost a second better than the previous record and nearly three seconds ahead of runner-up Germany. A second world record fell in the relay, as Peirsol's leadoff leg broke Lenny Krayzelburg's mark for the 100 backstroke. Because it works the majority of the muscles in the body and provides both aerobic benefits and resistance benefits (as the swimmer pulls and pushes through the water), the sport is generally considered one of the most complete forms of exercise. Swimming does not strain joints and connective tissue as much as many other forms of exercise, and swimmers injure themselves at a lower rate than most other athletes. Athletes in other sports who are recovering from injuries often swim to stay in shape.

Extractions: The NCAA News American swimming is facing an un-American dilemma. According to USA Swimming, the sport's national governing body, 40 percent of swimming medalists at the Athens Summer Games had ties to NCAA institutions and most were not donning gold, silver and bronze for the red, white and blue. Some people who are concerned about that cast a glance at the collegiate level where more than one-third of the point scorers at last year's NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships were foreign-born competitors and see a connection. While such diversity is the purported "American way," there are some in the swimming community who worry that the proliferation of international student-athletes eats into scholarship opportunities for American swimmers and thus diminishes the talent pool for the U.S. Olympic teams. They also believe that American colleges and universities end up training and coaching international student-athletes who then go home and win Olympic medals for competing teams.

Extractions: Swimming World Communicator - Magazine Archives - After 18 months of almost nonstop training, Lenny Krayzelburg took a much-needed, two-week break after the NCAA Championships last March. "Eighteen months was a long time to go without a break," says Lenny's coach, Mark Schubert, "but Lenny accomplished his major goal: winning two world championships. I think, though, that the emphasis on long course training may have cost him at NCAAs." This spring, Lenny was back in heavy training: 16,000 meters a day plus the stationary bike, weights, Vasa trainer and medicine ball. "I have Lenny training right through meets this spring and early summer," says Schubert, "and there's no doubt he's swimming tired."

Extractions: SYDNEY, Australia - Lenny Krayzelburg was a beleaguered boy, 15 years old and peering to his parents at the kitchen table with the saddest little eyes. This was 1988, in the tiny apartment in Studio City, Calif., where a mother and father, a son and daughter, were fighting for a share of the long, lost American Dream. "I can't make it," Lenny said to Oleg and Yelena, telling them these long days and nights of high school, a part-time job cleaning the community pool, and evenings of swim practice had taken its toll. He had to have an education, needed a job, so he wanted to stop swimming. Just quit. They had come to the United States out of communist Russia, Jews desperate for a place to practice religion without persecution, where the world for their two children was one of hope instead of despair. Peirsol, the 2003 NCAA Swimmer of the Year and six-time NCAA Champion, will try to replace fellow American Lenny Krayzelburg's Olympic achievement by winning the 100m and 200m backstrokes and the 400m medley relay. Peirsol captured silver in 2000 by finishing second to Krayzelburg in the 200m backstroke in Sydney, but this time Krayzelburg will be chasing him. At the U.S. Olympic Trials, Peirsol and Krayzelburg finished 1-2 in the 100m back before Peirsol won the 200m back in 1 minutes, 54.74 seconds, slicing .41 of a second off his own world record. Monday's gold-medal race was especially close as 57-hundredths of a second separated the top seven swimmers in the field of the men's 100m back. Austria's Markus Rogan took the silver with a time of 54.35 while Tomomi Morita of Japan took bronze in 54.36. Defending Olympic gold medalist Lenny Krayzelburg finished fourth in 54.38. Considered to be his feature event, Peirsol will swim the prelims and semis of the 200m backstroke on Wednesday, August 18. The finals of the 200m backstroke will be swam on the Thursday, August 19.
