Swimming & Diving: Sprint Speed This is a fundamental issue with many swimmers as some are distance types stroke I use a onearmed carry over to one side type of thing like tom dolan. http://experts.about.com/q/1564/3395875.htm
Extractions: My daughter just finished her 1st season on the high school swim team and has been swimming competively for a couple years. She's a big tall kid for 14 and has a nice long stroke, but has no sprint at the end of any of her races. She does well in the 200yd free, 200yd im(pr 2:42) and 500yd free(pr 6:44), but needs another "gear" at the end of her races. What kind of things should she be doing to develop stroke turnover and a sprint that won't hurt her shoulders or her endurance? Thanks. Great question! This is a fundamental issue with many swimmers as some are "distance" types per se and some are "sprinters." For instance, I like to think of my self as an all-around or what we call "utility" swimmer but in actuality I am more of a sprinter who had to swim some longer races and stroke events. She seems to be the opposite of myself where she is probably a great distance swimmer but needs to put a little punch in at the end of her race. Don't worry, you can become better at "the other side." Lets try to outline some strategies.

Extractions: Back to Main Two of a Kind Eddie Reese AUSTIN, Texas Eddie Reese and Jon Urbanchek have more in common than they think. Granted, one lives in Ann Arbor and cracks jokes in a loud Hungarian accent, while the other hangs out in Austin and whose sharp wit is provided in a dry manner. Besides that, both have trained world record holders, Olympic gold medallists and NCAA Championship teams. "There's no question that Jon and Eddie are two legends in the sport," said Michigan Associate head coach and Olympic silver medallist Eric Namesnik. "Both have done tremendous things for the sport of swimming and they have had tremendous impacts on young men's lives. It's always fun when they get together for a meet because you know you're watching two of the best coaches ever at work." This weekend at Canham Natatorium, Urbanchek and Reese will go head to head for the eighth time as seventh-ranked Michigan will host third-ranked Texas. Friday's competition will begin at 5 p.m. (CT) with long course meters and then conclude on Saturday at noon with short course yards. If past meets are any indication, it should be a close competition. The Longhorns lead the overall series 4-3, but suffered a 123-120 defeat last year in Austin at the Lee and Joe Jamail Texas Swim Center.
The Crimson News: December 1994 Seasons Greetings and Happy Holidays from the Harvard Men s swimming Office. tom dolan, the world record holder in the long course 400M IM, http://hcs.harvard.edu/~menswim/94-95/newsletter/94-dec.html
Extractions: DECEMBER 1994 Seasons Greetings and Happy Holidays from the Harvard Men's Swimming Office. We've had an exciting few weeks with a great period of training, Ivy League wins over Columbia and Army, and impressive wins in our Invitational over #2 Michigan and #13 Florida. As we get ready for the holiday break, we look forward to our Holiday Training trip to Sarasota, FL, our dual meet with #4 Auburn, and our post-Christmas trip to Colorado Springs. Coming in January are meets against Dartmouth, Brown, Navy, and Northeastern, reading period and exams, and final preparations for the H-Y-P meet at the beginning of February. It's a busy time here on the banks of the Charles River - busy...and FAST! Our next foe is Auburn University at the beginning of our training trip in Sarasota, FL., on December 18. Auburn finished fourth at the NCAA's a year ago and has benefited nicely from the demise of the UCLA men's program. Auburn has added four All-Americans to this year's team from UCLA, not to mention a corps of sprinters that rank tops in the NCAA. After our training trip we come back to campus for reading period, exams, meets with Dartmouth, Brown, Navy, and Northeastern. January will also serve as our preparation time for the much awaited dual meet rematch with Princeton down in New Jersey on February 3. This months Harvard Experience subject is Robert Kaufmann, the Captain of the 1962 Crimson Team and a member of the first Varsity team to beat Yale since 1937. He was an NCAA champion as a member of the 400 freestyle relay team that set the Harvard record that year, and has also held Harvard records in the 100 back, 200 back, 200 IM, and both medley and freestyle relays. He has just retired as the Headmaster of Deerfield Academy, a private preparatory school in Western Massachusetts.
