Other Sport Vintage of 98 hard to replace CROATIA PROFILE: After finishing third in France 98, Croatia will need to strike the right balance between youth and experience to sparkle in the Orient, writes Paul Doyle One thing is clear: do not judge Croatia's ability by their performances in friendlies. Manager Mirko Jozic will no doubt arrange a stack of them before next summer, but the chances of any of his players taking them seriously are roughly the same as the chances of Robert Prosinecki guiding Portsmouth to the Premiership title. Prosinecki is still a central schemer for his national team, as is Alen Boksic (right). The presence of such stars at glum English clubs such as Portsmouth and Middlesborugh may be incongruous, but there is nothing odd about their place in Jozic's team. And just to prove youth is no substitute for class, it was Boksic who bagged qualification with the crucial winner against Belgium (he also notched the goal that sealed qualification for France '98, but injury meant he missed out on Croatia's glorious expedition in the Finals).

Other Sport France finally arrive, Brazil take a tumble France 98 simultaneously saw the inauguration of the hosts as a great footballing power and the slide of the erstwhile holders, Brazil, into the ranks of the mediocre. The home sides facile victory expunged the foul memories of 1982 and 1986, when the French fell at the penultimate hurdle, and ignited scenes of celebration all along the Seine. The main toast of France was Zinedine Zidane, a quiet marseillais of Algerian origin who began his voyage to hero status with a red card against Saudi Arabia but culminated it with two goals in the final. Back in Brazil, fans, shocked at the teams spiritless display in a 3-0 defeat, demanded to know what befell their "phenomenon" 21 year-old striker Ronaldo collapsed and lost consciousness on the morning of the match and played in the final despite being visibly dazed. Vasca da Gama striker Edmundo, who was named as Ronaldos replacement until, just 45 minutes before kick-off, the official teamsheet was retracted and changed, muttered dark allegations as to why Ronaldo was risked and, months later, Brazilian congress ordered an investigation. But its findings were inconclusive.

Extractions: MLS directory LONDON (Monday, April 24, 2000) Much has been written recently about Major League Soccer signing a Mexican player with "superstar" status. Presumably it will cost the league a bundle, but the league apparently feels the investment is worth the risk given the large contingent of Mexican-Americans in MLS cities. However, there is another superstar that will be available in less than a month and he will cost nothing in transfer fees. Reliable reports out of London this week state that Davor Suker is on his way out at Arsenal. The Croatian international will be allowed to leave on a free transfer at the end of the Premier League season in May. The 32-year-old striker will be coming up on an option year of his contract which Arsenal is reluctant to pick up. The club already has powerful weapons up front including Dennis Bergkamp, Thierry Henry, and Nwanku Kanu, and are making a strong move in obtaining Europe's most sought-after striker, PSV Eindhoven's Ruud van Nistelrooy. With so many weapons up front, the club feels it has the luxury of letting Suker go. Many will remember that Suker was the top scorer at the World Cup in France '98. His six goals helped lead Croatia to a surprise third-place finish, including a 3-0 upset of Germany. His thunderous left foot was legendary in Spain after successful seasons with Real Madrid, even though he found himself on the bench during the club's run at the European Cup in 1998.

I reprint it here with persmission from the author. (Don't forget to check out the Soccer site on The Mining Co. for more World Cup coverage.) 7/9/98 5:55 AM Croatia lost to France yesterday 2-1 in a tight match in which Croatian playmaker Davor Suker (who plays for Spanish powerhouse Real Madrid) put in a beautiful goal and French defender Lilian Thuram, a black player "imported" from the French Antilles, somewhat providentially sent two to the back of the net, assuring the French a spot in the finals against Brazil. Some 80% of the French team is of "foreign origin", including former French colonies in North and Central Africa, the French Carribean, and European countries. Brazil defeated Holland, which has also "imported" players from its former colonies, including star forward Patrick Kluivert from Surinam. Racial tensions on the Dutch team, in part, led to a mediocre performance in the 1996 European Cup. Healing racial divisions by hiring both black and white ex-players (Ruud Gullit and Ronald Koeman, respectively) as advisors aided the Netherlands to a spectacular performance in the present World Cup.
