Extractions: "T HE day of glory has arrived," goes Frances national anthem. And indeed it had.At the sprawling Stade de France in St Denis on July 12, Didier Deschamps and his brigade scripted a golden chapter in their countrys soccer history by dethroning Brazil and lifting the glittering World Cup. The historic victory sparked off nationwide celebrations with over 1.5 million people thronging the Champs Elysees in Paris alone to give vent to their ecstatic feelings. According to rough estimates, the revelry surpassed the Liberation Day celebrations of 1944. The French victory, which incidentally was the first for the hosts in the history of the World Cup, was more of an anti-climax. Not many had placed their bets on the French, as the hosts, despite having an excellent goalkeeper in Fabien Barthez and an enviable defence manned by Lillian Thuram, Marcel Desailly and Laurent Blanc, lacked a strike force as efficient as that of former champions Brazil, Argentina and Italy, or even that of England, Germany, Croatia and Holland.

Extractions: After Donald Trump's organization deposed Russian policewoman Oxana Federova as this year's Miss Universe, the crown passed to the runner-up, Miss Panama Justine Pasek, who was crowned on September 24. The precise reason for Federova's ouster has not been stated by either Trump or Federova, though the pageant cited unspecified contract breaches. Pasek's elevation occupied the front pages of Panama's daily newspapers for several days. In an even more significant blow the freedom of information law, the Supreme Court denied a petition by the former Christian Democrat mayor of Panama City and legislator Willy Cochez, who wanted to know the names and salaries of all alternate legislators (suplentes) who are on the government payroll. Comptroller General Alvin Weeden refused to divulge the information, and the court ruled that since Cochez doesn't have a direct personal interest in knowning these things, he has no right to that information. Essentially the court held that government spending, and especially corruption, are none of the public's business. Abstaining from the decision were three of the nine magistrates, Arnulfo Arjona, Graciela Dixon and César Pereira. Transparency International's Fernando Berguido called the decision "a death blow to the Transparency Law."

Extractions: Gannett News Service (Tuesday, June 23, 1998) Morocco and Cameroon came close to joining Nigeria as African representatives in the second round of the World Cup, but both fell victim today, with officiating decisions playing key roles one direct, one indirect. Morocco appeared to be qualified from Group A following a 3-0 rout of Scotland, and with Brazil leading Norway 1-0 after Bebeto's goal in the 78th minute. But Norway, needing a win, scored two goals in the last eight minutes. With time running out, U.S. referee Esse Baharmast called defender Junior Baiano for excessive contact with striker Tore Andre Flo in the box, and Kjetil Rekdal converted the ensuing penalty kick in the 89th minute. Brazil players protested, saying the contact was minimal if at all, but to no avail. The victory put Norway at 1-0-2 and five points, one ahead of Morocco, which finished at 1-1-1 and four points. Brazil already had clinched Group A with two earlier victories but went all-out against a Norway team that in two matches the past couple years had beaten Brazil once and drawn once and whose coach Egil Olsen had boasted about it. "It's incredible," Olsen said. "I'm amazed at what happened."

Extractions: Print those playoff tickets. New England strengthened their post season hopes courtesy of a Jose Luis Morales 59th minute goal in what can only be described as a very ugly match. Juergen Sommer kicked an A.J. Wood shot aside that looked destined to equalize in stoppage time to keep his sheet clean. The Peter Principle was never more evident as NE sunk to their opponents level. DC, missing 7 regulars due to national team commitments held the run of play in the first half and it looked like the Mid-Michigan Bucks all over again. With William Sunsing out of the lineup due to his call up to the Costa Rican national side, Morales got his chance and didn't give up, firing a blind shot through a gaggle of players and into the far side of Scott Simpson's goal. Mauricio Wright played an outstanding match, spurring the Rev in the second half with his hard nosed play. In the end, the Rev got the points and New England must now make the return trip to DC for the big doubleheader which features the US v. Guatemala WC qualifier. Extractions: 1998 FIFA World Cup Date Champion Runner-Up 3rd Place Host June 10 - July 12 France Brazil Croatia France The 16th FIFA World Cup was the largest ever, contested by 32 teams with 64 matches played. The eight groups of four teams were spread out throughout France in the ten new or refurbished stadiums, with the opening game and the final held in the splendid new Stade de France just north of Paris. 32 countries meant 30 qualifying spots, providing more opportunities for teams from Africa and Asia. The four-team groups also reflected the geographical spread, with all but one of the pools comprising two Europeans, one from the Americas and one from Africa or Asia. As is often the case with the FIFA World Cup, the opening round threw up its fair share of surprises, with certain favorites having to make way for a few unfancied lesser lights in the second round. Spain failed to break their FIFA World Cup hoodoo after a slow start and despite a grandstand finish. Facing a race against the odds after a 3-2 loss to Nigeria in their opener, Javier Clemente's side racked up six goals against the hapless Bulgarians only for Paraguay to beat the group-leading Super Eagles and qualify at Spain's expense.

Extractions: Advanced Search / Archives Preferences By Omar Al-Ubaydli Football fans around the globe have watched with intrigue as Chelsea has transformed from a large, debt-laden group of overpaid mercenaries into an even larger group of overpaid mercenaries backed by the checkbook of Russian oil billionaire Roman Abramovich. Naturally, the question on everyones lips is: will they win anything? To begin, let us quickly review some of the vast talent that has congregated at Stamford Bridge: Hernan Crespo, Claude Makelele, Juan-Sebastien Veron, Damian Duff, and Wayne Bridge are but a few of the legion that has reinforced a team that already included the likes of Marcel Desailly, Frank Lampard, and Jimmy-Floyd Hasselbaink. There is little doubt that no team in Europe, and possibly not even any national team, can boast Chelseas depth. Remember that Chelseas second-11 finished fourth in last seasons premier league. Add to this over $150 million of world-class talent, and, on paper, Chelsea is a strong contender for any competition they enter. Surely there must be a catch, right? You cannot simply pay your way to immediate and long-lasting success. Look at Inter, Lazio, and Fulham: each of these three clubs has thrown money at their respective squads and finished with little to show for their extravagance. Yet Chelsea is different. Inter, Lazio, and Fulham all made distinct but critical errors that were bound to take the wheels off the spend-your-way-to-glory train, and Chelsea appears to have avoided all three routes to oblivion.
