Extractions: Desmond Cup THE showpiece of the Limerick Desmond League season takes place in Clounreask this Saturday night when Abbeyfeale Utd., and Newcastle west meet in the Jack's Bar (Askeaton), Desmond Cup final, kick-off at 7.30. Extra-time will not be played and, if a replay is required, it will take place on Friday week in Clounreask at 7.00, when extra-time and penalties will be invoked if necessary. Of the two teams, Newcastle west can boast of the more recent appearance in the final. They beat Askeaton 3-1 in the 2000 decider, having previously won the Cup in 1956, 1968, 1969 and 1994. Six of the 2000 squad are on duty again on Saturday night, namely keeper Tommy Quinn, defenders Noel Murphy, John Harnett and Seanie Gleeson and midfielder Billy Cartlidge and Darren McCoy. Murphy, who was Desmond League Player of the Year in 1997-98, should start at centre-half along with skipper Keith Power, thus giving Newcastle both experience and pace in defence. Shane Doherty, if recovered from injury, and the vastly experienced Gleeson, are also options in the centre of defence for manager Jerry Cronin, who includes a spell with Crystal Palace in his impressive C.V. Shay Lyons the Youths Division One Player of the Year, and Harnett will be the full-backs, while Quinn will guard the nets, as he did four years ago.
