More accurate finishing would have allowed the reigning MLS Eastern Division champions to pad the scoring on the numerous scoring opportunities the team enjoyed. Mathis netted the first goal in the 36th minute. Bayern defender Michael Tarnat attempted a pass to a teammate on the back line, but Mathis was there to intercept it. The Conyers, Georgia native, the only forward pressuring at the time, then used a delightful chip to loft the ball over goalkeeper Bernd Dreher, who almost managed to get his fingertips on the ball. Comas almost doubled in the 43rd minute when Steve Shak sent in a cross from the right side. The Colombian raced to the ball but his glancing header was deflected by Dreher into a corner. Off the ensuing corner kick, Shak, in the center of the box, knocked the ball on goal but Dreher, again called into action, made the save.

Extractions: D.C. United is sharing its home for the first time, creating some interesting challenges. United's first game on a converted baseball field was a tie, a 1-1 draw against Pumas of Mexico on Wednesday night in a first-leg semifinal in the CONCACAF Champions' Cup. For soccer purposes, the game showed that the U.S. league champion can compete with the Mexican league champion. For logistical purposes, the game was a first test of a unique, complex plan to accommodate two sports at RFK Stadium. advertisement Stands had to be reconfigured, and the infield dirt was replaced with trays of grass during an intense 72-hour changeover following a Washington Nationals exhibition game on Sunday. The sunken pitcher's mound was at the edge of a penalty box, and one of the goalkeepers stood along the third-base line to defend his net. The result was an uneven turf at one end of the field, making every possession a little more adventurous. United defender Mike Petke was the most vocal critic, complaining of a "divot" in front of the net.

E-Mail This Article Top News United What is RSS? All RSS Feeds By William Gildea Washington Post Staff Writer Friday, November 5, 2004; Page D03 Mike Petke is one of the most durable defenders in MLS, even if he isn't the most celebrated. For five years beginning in 1998, he toiled for the MetroStars before D.C. United acquired him in a major trade going into last season. With a Ripkenesque attribute for playing despite injuries, Petke has continued to be a stalwart on the back line for United just as he was in setting a MetroStars record for games and minutes played. There are, naturally, differences between Petke and baseball's "Iron Man," Cal Ripken. Unlike Ripken, Petke has never played on a championship team. But now the possibility looms as never before. Like his United teammates, Petke seems eager to make the most of Saturday night's Eastern Conference final against New England at RFK, with the winner to play Nov. 14 for the MLS Cup. If anything, his approach to soccer has become even more serious than it was more team-oriented, perhaps just at the time when D.C. United is playing its best soccer in his two seasons here, and, in fact, its best since its last championship season in 1999. "I don't know of any team in this league that would be in this situation and not up for the game," he said yesterday after United worked out in a cold, hard rain on RFK's auxiliary field.
