"I am very appreciative of coach Shula and his staff for the job they have done over the past two years," Alabama athletic director Mal Moore said. "We are emerging from a very difficult period in our history and the stability provided by coach Shula and his staff has played a large part in that recovery. I feel coach Shula has this program headed in the right direction and I am confident that he can lead Alabama back to a position of national prominence and prestige."

Extractions: The History Of House written by Phil Cheeseman for DJ Magazine It's been ten years since the first identifiably house tracks were put on to vinyl, ten years which have changed the technology behind the electronic music revolution beyond recognition but left the basic structure of house intact. It's seven years since it was being said house couldn't last, that it was just hi-NRG, a fast blast that would wither as quickly as it had started. But then the music reinvented itself, and then again and again until it gradually dawned on people that house wasn't just another phase of club culture, it was club culture, the continuing future of dance music. The reason? It's simple. People like to dance to house. "I started dabbling in making my own music." says Hurley. "Just making tracks to play as a DJ, not really thinking as far as producing - more to do with just having something to play that nobody else had. And one of these tracks, 'Music Is The Key', got such a good response that I decided to borrow some money and go in with another guy, who happened to be Rocky Jones, and put the record out." Meanwhile, things were gathering pace over in New York though the development was a lot slower. Mixers like Larry Levan, Tony Humphries, Timmy Regisford and Boyd Jarvis, who came straight after Shep Pettibone and Jellybean Benitez were making ground as remixers, and fired by the raw club sound of Colonel Abrams, the deep, soulful club sound that became known as garage was taking shape with early releases on the Supertonics, Easy Street and Ace Beat labels. Paul Scott was one of the first with 'Off The Wall' in 1985 but before that there was Serious Intention's deep dub classic 'You Don't Know' and even before that was World Premiere's 'Share The Night'.

Extractions: HOME BACK ISSUES - FEBRUARY, 2004 Not so, says Thomas Sowell, one of my favorite writers. There are differences between groups that have nothing to do with discrimination. "Does anyone seriously believe," he writes, "that whites usually play basketball as well as blacks? Is anyone surprised when Asian-American youngsters walk off with science prizes, year after year." The difference, Sowell writes, is to a great extent embedded in a group's culture, in the things it values.

Extractions: For the first time at the University, a historically and predominately black fraternity has a house on fraternity row. Theatre arts senior Anthony Brown, the campus relations chair for Kappa Alpha Psi, said the fraternity just returned to campus last fall after taking a five-year leave of absence due to low enrollment. Having a house is expected to increase membership, he said. The fraternity currently has 15 members living in a house on the 1000 block of University Avenue. While the fraternity is predominantly black, membership is not limited by race. The fraternity does not discourage anyone from joining, Brown said. Fred Thomas, the adviser for the chapter said he is excited for the fraternity and the University. Thomas said that having this diversity will increase socialization within the community.

Bobb, who lives in an independent-living apartment on the grounds of the Vintage Retirement Community, will have a birthday party today with her friends there. From the early 1920s until her move from El Paso to the Vintage in Denton 10 years ago, Bobb has had dancing and music in her life. She played in three bands, one of which was titled the Energy Sisters. The Sisters would frequent Fort Bliss and other officer clubs. But now, with her hands marred by arthritis, she is barely able to play the mandolin, violin and harp like she used to. Born in Bayou Paul, La., in 1905, Bobb was raised by parents who believed that their children should be intellectually curious. Her father, a smith, and her mother, a homemaker, demanded the utmost diligence from their nine daughters and two sons. But there was one specific occasion with her mother that Bobb still remembers from her childhood that shaped her character.

Rogers may have committed a misdemeanor, but former Major Leaguer and 1983 World Series MVP Rick Dempsey has a much more felonious baseball story according to his recollection of his youth baseball days on ESPN.com. Later in the same story on ESPN.com in which various athletes and celebrities recall their earliest youth baseball memories, Los Angeles Clippers forward Corey Maggette remembers throwing a 23-strikeout game when he was 12. Hmmm. Did it go to extra innings or were there a lot of dropped third strikes? Youth baseball games are generally seven innings. Seven times three is 21.
