Extractions: SOCCER Constantine Fatouros, a Greek soccer referee, had to disguise himself as a Catholic priest to escape an angry crowd at a match on the island of Chios. Unfortunately, he was discovered before his ship could leave for Athens, but he suffered only a barrage of flying fruit. The largest crowd ever to attend a soccer match was 199,854 spectators at the World Cup final in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on July 16, 1950. The game pitted Brazil against Uruguay. Uruguay won the match, 2-1. On March 8, 1961, Colin Jones headed a soccer ball 3,412 times in 34 minutes 8 seconds at Queensferry, near Chester, England. Jones set this record for heading when he was 15 years old. Soccer teams in Kenya frequently retain medicine men to stand by the field mumbling incantations and casting spells because many of the players depend on witchcraft for luck and confidence. A ball is occasionally taken out of play because a team claims it has been bewitched. Dave Lovatt of Derby, England, was fined 10 shillings for smiling at a referee during a game.

The brightest feature of the game for the home side was the form of Leicester City striker Emile Heskey and he dominated left wing play in the first half without himself or strike partner Alan Shearer managing a shot on target. Shearer headed just wide from a deep corner by David Beckham in the 11th minute and ten minutes later fell as he tried to reach a good cross from Heskey who had made a powerful run down the left. England placed David Beckham at the centre of their midfield but his influence on the game was minimal although a first half free kick went only a foot wide as it dipped past the goal. Andy Cole managed a shot in the 80th minute that tested goalkeeper Pablo Cavallero as he turned on a Scholes through pass while Kily Gonzales fired just wide for Argentina from long range.

Advanced Search Wembley Stadium Redevelopment Back to index Hero wanted for Wembley Statue By Robin Clementson THE Football Association wants to link the development of the new national stadium in Wembley with a tribute to one of the country's best loved soccer stars, by honouring him with a statue. The player or manager to be commemorated will be voted for by the public in a national poll when plans for the memorial have been finalised. With the demolition of the old stadium's famous twin towers expected later this month, the developers have decided to recycle some of the rubble by building the monument, which will stand at the approach to the new stadium. It is believed that the FA's favourite is the late England and West Ham legend Sir Bobby Moore, who lifted the Jules Rimmet World Cup at Wembley in 1966. Other names suggested include Sir Geoff Hurst who scored England's winning goal against West Germany in that World Cup final; Sir Alf Ramsey, who managed the World Cup winning side, and Sir Stanley Matthews, who played for Stoke City and England. Younger fans may vote for current stars, such as David Beckham. Nick Barron, spokesman for Wembley National Stadium Ltd, said that plans for the memorial were in the early stages.
