I am ecstatic that he's shooting for a Saturday match. My question is, Steven, was this anonymous quote: "It's typical D.C. shenanigans...we're not surprised this is happening," from a Crew official? Or did these sour grapes come from elsewhere? Steven Goff: The anonymous quote was one of several from other MLS folks who obviously are either bitter/jealous/upset at DCU and Payne.

Extractions: Storylines like the Baltimore Blasts magical run to the 2002-2003 MISL Championship are not often written and are believed even less frequently. But this improbable fairy tale did indeed unfolded this year. The storybook ride had many twists and turns and look destined to be unwritten for much of the season as the Blast got off to an ominous 5-12 start. As the team lingered near the bottom of the standings, one, nay two coaching changes occurred without much success. The third coach selected to lead the Blast was one of their very own broadcasters. This coach proved to be a charm as the team caught fire. It would be a season to remember as Cinderella traded in her glass slippers for a pair of Baltimore Blast cleats. Dewan Bader along with some of the other Blast veterans helped lead the turnaround which saw them end the regular season red hot to make the playoffs. Bader was one of only four Blast defenders who played 33 games or more this season. The greatest thing about this year is how we turned it around as a team. We had three coaches this year and the third coach, more or less, just ended up turning things over to the players. We were fortunate that we were a very experienced, a veteran team. We just buckled down, we did not have a list of great players but we had a list of very very good players that all came together. And come together, they did. Baltimores run to close the regular season was impressive, but its what the Blast did in the postseason that was truly incredible.

Miami (3-3-4, 13 points) overcame a 1-0 deficit and being shorthanded for 35 minutes to score twice in the final 16 minutes and send Colorado (4-6-0, 12 points) to its third consecutive defeat at home. The Rapids, who had been outscored 10-2 in its previous two home games, took the lead in the 50th minute through Jason Bent's first MLS goal, and then were given a man advantage when Miami's Henry Gutierrez was red carded five minutes later. But it was Miami, playing its second game under interim coach Ray Hudson, who would take advantage and score goals in the 74th and 79th minutes to secure the victory. Matters worsened for the Rapids in the 90th minute when captain Marcelo Balboa was also red carded after picking up his second yellow card of the game. The red card means Balboa must sit out Wednesday's game in New England (see below).

Larry Stewart in the LA Times, and a bunch of other people, are pretty much on him like hairspray over his overly scripted announcements at the end of games. Speaking of the Olympics...when last we saw Ahn Jung Hwan, he was doing a stupid speedskating impersonation. And a couple of days later, US soccer fans forgave Koreans every tiny little slight, past, present and future, subtle and grand. Wanna burn our flag? Use it as a diaper? Extractions: by Dan Loney November 14 , 2002 (CSA) Sorry this column is a little late the "I" on my keyboard was broken. See, thats hilarious, because, theres like this rule, where youre really not supposed to use the first person in a column, and I (heh) do it constantly. "Alexi Lalas played for Padova, not Parma." How different would the 1990 World Cup have been if Wegerle, Hugo Perez and Thomas Dooley been on the team? You can only blame Bob Gansler for leaving off one of those players, though. The best explanation for Wegerles decline comes from google.com. When you type in "Roy Wegerle," the first site that comes up is The Phoenix Center, and Roys testimony for their work in rehabilitating his knee after eight surgeries. This doesnt explain why he still made the 1998 World Cup squad, unless you consider Roy Lassiter as the only alternative. But at least he had MLS Extratime to fall back on. I dont know what Rob Stones pep talk to Wegerle was before air time, but it probably went along the lines of "If you stay in a complete monotone for the whole broadcast, Ill buy you a Kit Kat bar." It took Alexi Lalas to save MLS Extratime, however briefly. Although actually my cats could have replaced Wegerle and still looked good in comparison.
