D.C. United Descent Can Be Linked To Lassiter Departure DC United could not wait to send striker roy lassiter to Miami after winning MLS For four wonderful seasons, United fans feasted on attacking soccer, http://www.soccertimes.com/oped/2000/aug17.htm
Extractions: MLS directory WASHINGTON, D.C. (Thursday, August 17, 2000) I've been scratching my head a lot these days over the collapse of D.C. United. Who could have imagined such a dramatic fall in form? While there are number of reasons to explain United's demise, I still feel the loss of striker Roy Lassiter was a major factor. How many times this season has the ball whizzed across an opponent's penalty area just needing a foot to put it away. "There goes another Lassiter goal," I found myself saying time and time again. D.C. United could not wait to send striker Roy Lassiter to Miami after winning MLS Cup '99, but the team could not replace his goal-scoring and now has the worst record in the league. With all his failings as a player, Lassiter had an instinct for scoring goals. Numbers don't lie. Lassiter=18 goals in 1999 (not to mention 11 assists). Albright=3 goals in 2000. While Lassiter missed a number of chances and his heading ability was suspect, he scored goals, and it's goals that win games. You can play all the pretty soccer you like and make 30 passes in a buildup, but if the ball doesn't reach the back of the net, youre not going to win. United general manager Kevin Payne said he had to trade Lassiter due to the salary cap, and I believe him. But why couldn't he have traded two or three second-tier players, such as A.J. Wood, Carey Talley or Geoff Aunger for

Extractions: Appeared in the December 2001 edition of the Emerald City Gazette The Tampa Bay Mutiny was one of two teams that Major League Soccer voted out of the tribe two days before the finale of Survivor: Africa and the only thing I can think of is, "Well, at least we don't have to look at those stupid uniforms anymore." Is that any way to react to the death of a loved one? Well, if truth be told, the Mutiny never really were a loved one. I adopted them because Tampa is my hometown, because the city where I was living at the time of MLS' birth (Indianapolis) bid for, but wasn't awarded a team, and because I lived and died with the old North American Soccer League's Tampa Bay Rowdies. After the NASL went under in 1985, the Rowdies survived, in a sense-playing exhibition matches, playing indoors, and finally joining the ASL, which eventually became what we call the A-League today. By the time the Kick in the Grass guys finally went under in 1994, MLS was on the horizon, and I looked forward to them being reborn. Problem was, the Mutiny could never

MLS 2001 GOLD MINE AWARDS by Jeff Dieffenbach Sport. Not a sport. Its a debate that will never be settled, but one school of thought has it that if you cant measure the result (gymnastics, synchronized swimming, ballroom dancing), its not a sport. Extremely difficult, certainly! A sport, NO! Likewise, many year-end awards (MVP, Rookie of the Year, and so on) fail the measurement test. Others (top goal scorer, best goals against average, etc) practically report themselves, no point in repeating them here. Great and not so great performances abounded in MLS this year. Some obvious, some less so. The focus here leans towards the latter, buried performances mined like nuggets from the statistical depths. Herewith, the 2001 - and first annual - MLS Gold Mine awards. Sharpshooter award : Anyone can score goals given enough shots. Sure, Jason Kreis of the Dallas Burn scored 7 goals, good for 19th overall (tied with Clint Mathis, Dante Washington, Steve Ralston, Roy Lassiter, Sasha Victorine, and Landon Donavanelite company, to be sure) among the 134 players who scored goals in the MLS this year. But it took him 77 shots, or one goal every 11 shots!

Extractions: For NC State men's soccer coach George Tarantini, the game of soccer belongs to the players. In 19 seasons as the Wolfpack's head coach, his teams have played an exciting, attacking, South American style of soccer that is familiar to the native Argentinian. It has become Tarantini's trademark. "There is a responsibility that we have to assume, because I think the game deserves to be exciting," said Tarantini, whose brother, Alberto, played in two World Cups for Argentina. "The main reason you want to play attacking soccer is that the players want it, the coaches want it and the fans want it. I don't think [soccer] can be played any other way." A former professional player, Tarantini began his coaching career at Arlington (N.Y.) High School in 1976, leading his squad to a 15-1 record and a Class AA Section I title. From there, he spent four years as an assistant at Dutchess Community College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. He came to NC State as an assistant coach for both the men's and women's programs from 1982-85, before becoming the men's head coach in 1986.
