It seems a niggling injury will keep him sidelined. Harry's team in England, Leeds United, won't be too upset, of course. Leeds has a history of holding their young star back and saving him for their own games.

Extractions: With the OFCs Olympic Qualifying tournament set down for just over two months time in Sydney and Auckland, it is a good time to examine some issues pertaining to the Olyroos a little over a year out form Athens. Olympic soccer has been somewhat of the ugly sister of the game thats not to say it doesnt have its own charm and appeal. More than 94,000 crammed the MCG for the Olyroos against Italy in 2000 and over 104,000 watched the final 3 weeks later in Sydney. In between we witnessed a great number of fixtures in front of some healthy crowds right around Australia. The 2000 Olympic football tourney left its legacy in terms of stadiums. Adelaide got a new Hindmarsh Stadium, Canberra Stadium became a fully-fledged quality ground and the Olympics were the catalyst behind turning the Gabba from an over-grown run down dog track to a World-Class venue. The negatives were on the pitch itself. The Olyroos went in primed for a legitimate crack at a medal. The Matildas, with luck on home crowds on their side, would have hoped for the same. By the end of the Group stage Australias sons and daughters had let in no less than 12 goals, half a dozen for each side. The Olyroos managed 3 goals for, the girls only 2.

Extractions: Kewell had been offered higher wages and Champions League football elsewhere, but having been a Liverpool supporter as a boy, he found a move to Anfield irresistable, saying: "You can have all the money in the world but you want to look back on your career and see the medals in the pot. You want to look back and say 'Yes, I was in that final.' "There was just something special about Liverpool and that is why I accepted their offer. I was offered a lot more money to go to different clubs. Money was not the main factor. The main factor was my family and obviously the coach." Sydney-born Harry was plucked from the New South Wales Soccer Academy by Leeds United and given his debut way back in the 1995/96 season as a 17-year-old by Howard Wilkinson, and it was on the left wing that Kewell first made his name, deputising for Lee Sharpe with a series of breathtaking performances. But it wasn't just pace and trickery that caught the eye, Kewell also showed a devastating eye for goal and was used as Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink's strike partner for periods of his first season. Kewell's first team opportunities were limited under George Graham and it wasn't until David O'Leary took the helm at the Yorkshire club that Kewell really burst into the public's consciousness. Unlike other promising youngsters, Harry simply got better with age and he continued wowing the crowds until the 1999/00 campaign when he was crowned the PFA Young Player of the Year, as well as Leeds' player of the year.

Extractions: Full squads will be chosen, but Farina says only ppl playing regular first team football will be wanted. Which casts a shadow on Paul Okon's future, and also raises the question, who will Lead the aussies? Kewell? Emerton? Moore? These three seem to be the most likely options. They all have their pluses. I think Kewell would inspire the team, but he does this to an extent anyway. It may mean that he may be more likely to want to play more often for Australia, but it may not, and really should we have to "bribe" him with the captaincy to make him play for us? Emerton led the Olyroos in 2000, and will be around for a while yet. The question is, is he the type of leader we are after? He will be usually over shadowed on the field by Kewell, and when it comes to organisers, and talking, Craig Moore has him covered. Which brings me to Craig Moore, the organiser at the back, and the talker in the team. He is a good leader, but how much longer will he be around for?

Extractions: Leeds boss Terry Venables has rejected claims he put undue pressure on Harry Kewell to skip Australia's friendly against England. The denial came after Soccer Australia chairman Remo Nogarotto criticised Venables for trying to prevent the forward from playing in the midweek game at Upton Park. "I didn't pick Harry last weekend," said Venables. There's no dispute between me and Harry, I get on fine with him "Our physio felt that he was a risk and I felt, in those circumstances, he shouldn't play on Wednesday as he could have ruled himself out for four to six weeks. "Harry thought it was just touch and go and that he would be all right. "I had a bit of trouble trying to track down the Australian people and wasn't getting any comeback. I was getting a bit concerned so I eventually rang Harry and said I didn't want him to play.

Talented, pacy player who can put in a mean cross and at the time also showed he can tackle back as well. A lot was expected of him, both for Leeds and internationally. For most of the 97-98 season, Harry tended to play up front in a twosome/threesome with Wallace and Hasselbaink and proved more than a handful for the opposition defences. He looked a little jaded at the start of the 98-99 season, but his performances from December onwards were considerably improved, and he started to take more of a central attacking role (although he's by no means a 'classic' centre forward), popping up with some useful goals and coming third in the PFA Young Footballer of the Year poll. He's now recognised as one of the best players in the Premier League - and is a regular in the side and scores a few goals - but must take more of the simpler chances offered to him.

Ross Stapleton reports: Advertisement Kewell's counsel, Andrew Monson, claimed the offending article was "particularly damaging because it came from the mouth of an extremely well-known and respected presenter of Match of the Day â someone readers would expect to be well-informed and authoritative on matters to do with football." The Guardian reports that Monson argued Lineker had accused Kewell of being "a fool" and implied he was a knave â "that is, that he was guilty of dishonourable conduct," and that by further implication, Kewell had "naively and stupidly allowed [his manager] to manipulate him to his financial detriment."

Extractions: Soccer Fans Network Forums English Soccer Liverpool PDA View Full Version : Harry Kewell : 4 - 5 Weeks Highway Penguin 01-05-2005, 02:53 AM The Liverpool FC attacker Harry Kewell will "be out of action between four and five weeks" with a groin injury, although he should be fit for the first leg of the UEFA Champions League knockout tie against Bayer 04 Leverkusen. The Australian international sustained the injury in a Premiership victory against Newcastle United FC on 19 December. After learning that Kewell would not need surgery, the Reds hoped to be able to call on the 26-year-old in early January. However, a club spokesman told Liverpool's official website: "[Kewell] saw a specialist and had an injection in his groin. He is likely to be out of action between four and five weeks." Kewell played in all of Liverpool's group stage games, a six-match sequence which ended with a 3-1 victory against Olympiacos CFP that secured the four-time European champions a place in the last 16 of the Champions League. Kewell will hope to be match-fit for the home first leg against Leverkusen on 22 February, but should definitely be in contention for the trip to Germany on 9 March.

Extractions: Soccer Fans Network Forums Other Regions Australian Soccer PDA View Full Version : Harry Kewel Aussie Captain? Robledo 07-25-2002, 08:59 PM Why is Farina picking this muppet as captain? He rarely plays for your national team cuz of his so called 'injuries' (sometimes debatable) and seems too uncommitted to the Socceroos from what I've seen. Someone like Emerton would be a better choice, and would command more respect 07-26-2002, 04:21 AM I agree. Kewell has seemed uncommitted to the national team and I don't think he would be a worthy captain. I was disappointed that Okon as captain did not play in Oceania Championships and Kewell with his involvement restricted to "serious matches" (like Leeds vs Colo Colo) is not the sort of player who will lead by example and encourage players to play for their country and not match bonuses. At this point the player most deserving is Chipperfield who was willing to come back and play. Skoko is most likely though as it looks like the national team will be overhauled over the next few years and he will be one of the few experienced faces left. Bresciano is another player who could blossom before next WC qualifiers. Looney 07-26-2002, 01:47 PM
