Extractions: First Published: Nov 13, 1999 Advantage Turkey after this 1-1 draw in Dublin that sees Ireland suffering significant disadvantages as they prepare for the first leg. The Irish conceded an away goal in the 82nd minute - less than three minutes after Robbie Keane had produced an excellent finish to put the home side in front. Keane got himself needlessly suspended from the leg with an 85th minute yellow card for dissent rulng him out of contention for the trip to famously hostile Attaturk stadium in Bursa in a remote part of north west Turkey. The Irish have more problems in attack as in form veteran Niall Quinn was injured in the warm up before this game begun and goalkeeper Alan Kelly limped out of the action in the 62nd minute with a groin strain that looks certain to see him miss the trip to Turkey next week. Kelly's replacement in goal - Dean Kiely - was laying his first game for the national team and was hardly tested as Turkey needed a penalty to get back on level terms after Keane had put Ireland in front.

Extractions: Just when veteran Irish defender Denis Irwin was resigning himself to leaving Old Trafford, Manchester United have announced that contract talks with the player are imminent! Cork-born Irwin announced on Monday that he was to start looking for a new club after failing to tie United down to negotiations on a new deal. Manager Alex Ferguson had publicly called for Irwin and fellow-veteran Teddy Sheringham to be awarded new contracts - but the Old Trafford plc board seemed to be waiting to install a new manager before extending the players' employment. But now chief executive Peter Kenyon inists: "There is no suggestion we won't be offering either of them a new deal. "We will be talking with Denis. There is nothing sinister about it. We have just both got to find the time to sit down and start. The stories that there is stalling going on are certainly not right." "We are aware that both Denis and Teddy's contracts are up and we'll have to deal with those before the end of the season," Kenyon continued. "We will be sitting down with both of them with a view to both continuing at the club." Irwin joined United from Oldham in 1990 and was awarded a testimonial last season. Last season too, he retired from international football in order to extend his club career.
Extractions: Former Republic of Ireland international Denis Irwin seems to be resigning himself to leaving Manchester United this summer. The 35-year-old's one-year contract is up in May - and the club is unwilling to give him a new one pending the appointment of a new manager. Current manager Alex Ferguson has publicly called for Irwin to be given a new contract - but the club has resisted. And with the new-found good form of Irwin's long-term replacement, Mikael Silvestre, the Corkman has begun to cast his eyes elswhere. "The club have offered me nothing, so I don't know what my options are," Irwin said. "I've had one-year contracts for the last two or three years, and in an ideal world I'd like to finish my playing career here. "But it doesn't bother me stepping aside or stepping down. It wouldn't be easy leaving United but it doesn't frighten me. He continued: "I know it can be strange leaving one club and going to another with new players, but if it's something I have to do, then I'll have to do it." back to Irish abroad stories back to main headlines
