Extractions: Contents KICKING AROUND Brian Glanville Column GERMANY 1 England 5. Who in their senses could ever have predicted such a result in that World Cup qualifying match in Munich? Beforehand, a seemingly confident German team, a super confident former captain and manager Franz Beckenbauer seemed confident that they would beat England as they had at Wembley. A draw was the least and worst they expected, and that would give them comfortably half a dozen points ahead of England at the top of their eliminating group. When, after just six minutes, feeble England defending gave Carsten Jancker an easy chance to put the Germans in the lead, who could doubt their eventual victory? After all, they had recently won a friendly in Hungary while England, admittedly well under strength, had capitulated embarrassingly to the Dutch at Tottenham. But very shortly before half-time, two crucial things happened. Causing the Germans bitterly to regret the blatant missed chance by the young mid-fielder Sebastian Deisler which would have doubled their lead midway through that half. First, David Seaman, whose slow reaction in the English goal at Wembley to Dietmar Hamann's free kick had given Germany their 1-0 success, made a fine and crucial save. Shortly before that, he had badly missed what seemed a simple cross. But now when Bohme, at 1-1, struck the ball powerfully low and left-footed, Seaman launched himself down to his right to beat the ball away with one hand. Not bad at all for a veteran goalkeeper. And hard on the heels of that came England's second goal. It was skilfully made and taken, Rio Ferdinand elegantly playing the ball back from David Beckham's left-footed cross for Stephen Gerrard, who had called for it, striking a tremendous, if deflected, shot past the much vaunted German 'keeper, Oliver Kahn. 2-1 to England and the floodgates would now open.

Review by Deborah Mervold. excerpt: As soon as we clattered into Portage Street, our cleats rattling on the sidewalk and echoing from the houses, I saw the stranger. He was near the end of the street, and he was watching us. The others didn't notice him. They were too busy playing street soccer. Shay kicked the ball to Brian, who slammed it against a garden fence. It bounced to Julie, who trapped it neatly and rolled it to me. I was behind everybody and panting, as usual. Brian crouched in the middle of the road, dancing on his toes, his arms wide, guarding an imaginary goal. As I swung my leg, my cleats slipped on the sidewalk. Before I fell backwards, my foot shot under the ball and sent it arcing high toward Brian's make-believe goal. He leapt sensationally but the ball flew over him.

Robbie Keane was played in at close range to hit high into the net from close range after Niall Quinn won a header against Carsten Ramelow and man-of-the-match Oliver Khan finally conceded. Germany were on the brink of becoming the first nation to qualify for the second stages of the World Cup finals with a win over the Republic of Ireland until their defence cracked in the 92nd minute. Miroslav Klose is the top scorer at the final after recording the 19th minute winner which was his fourth of the tournament. Klose has now hit 12 goals in 14 games for the Germans and he stooped to head in a free header after Michael Ballack clipped a ball forward at an angle from the left wing. Ireland responded by taking charge of the game in Ibaraki.
Extractions: First Published: Nov 15, 2001 The Republic of Ireland took the last but one place in the World Cup finals next year with a narrow defeat in Tehran. Hamadi scored with a close range header in the final few seconds from Hamadi but it meant little. The visitors were able to hold off the home team roared on by more than 100,000 fans at the Azadi stadium but Iran did not do enought to merit parity over two legs with the Mick McCarthy's well-organised team. The Irish will now take a place in the December 1st draw in the Korean port city of Busan and after only one defeat over the past year they desevre their place among the elite despite a lack of true world class talent in the Irish squad. After a quieter first half than many expected, Iran came out for the second session needing goals and they increased the tempo of their game considerably.
Extractions: SoccerTimes EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (Sunday, June 11, 2000) It has been five years since the United States could say it has dominated Mexico. But it did so today in Giants Stadium, capturing the Nike U.S. Cup with an easy 3-0 victory over a makeshift Mexican national team before 45,008 fans. Brian McBride The U.S. got goals from Brian McBride , and second-half substitutes Frankie Hejduk and Ante Razov , plus solid play both in the midfield and on defense, easily defeating an overmatched Mexican team made up primarily of players from the Pumas UNAM club team. "I thought we did well today," said U.S. coach Bruce Arena . "Our defense was very strong. We got very good play from our back line. (Carlos) Llamosa and (Jeff) Agoos played very well. We had good ball movement and we came at them. I was very leased with the effort and the result." The U.S., which needed a victory or a tie to win the Cup, finished 2-0-1. Mexico, which would have taken the trophy with a victory, was 1-1-1. Ireland (1-1-1) claimed second place with a 2-1 victory over South Africa (0-3) behind goals from Steven McPhail and Niall Quinn, whose 20th international goal tied Ireland's Frank Stapleton for the country's all-time scoring mark. The U.S. victory ended a three-match winning streak for Mexico over the Americans in this competition. After losing to the U.S. in 1995, Mexico won in 1996, 1997 and 1999.
Irish Abroad - Irish American News soccer Roy Keane is back but hes not a shadow of the imposing character of old, HERO OF THE WEEK shay given was watched by the Chelsea owner Roman http://www.irishabroad.com/news/irishinamerica/sport/sidelineviewsmarch30.asp
Extractions: CLASSIFIEDS ... Irish Voice Sideline Views By Cathal Dervan SOCCER: Roy Keane is back but hes not a shadow of the imposing character of old, on or off the pitch. Keano was excellent in the first half on Saturday night but drifted into obscurity like so many of his teammates as Israel forced the pace after the break. Hes also lost his mean touch in the dressingroom. Back at the start of the 2002 qualifying campaign Keane berated Mick McCarthy and his teammates for blowing a two goal lead in Holland. After Saturdays surrender in Tel Aviv he was more like a pussycat than a wounded tiger when he said, Were down at the moment, but well be okay. Not quite how he treated Mick and the Muppets back in September 2000, is it? SOCCER: Theres a real danger now that Irelands failure to win in Paris and Tel Aviv, games that were both there for the taking, will open the Group Four door to a stuttering French side. A France victory in Wednesday nights game in Tel Aviv may well change this opinion, but I have a feeling that Raymond Domenech will be sacked as French boss in the very near future and replaced by the likes of Jean Tigana or Laurent Blanc. Both of them are well capable of persuading the likes of Zidane, Thuram and Makelele out of retirement, and then were in real trouble. SOCCER: Security was strict but brisk at Dublin and Tel Aviv airports last week as all the scaremongering stories about the safety of the Irish team and fans proved totally unfounded. One supporter, though, did test the Israeli officials on the ground in Dublin. Asked the purpose of his visit to Tel Aviv, a stupid question considering everyone on board was there for the match, he replied, An international peace conference. On another day he may well have sent back home before take-off, but not this time.
