Extractions: HOME SOCCER RUGBY CRICKET ... EPL Fantasy GILES FILES: EPL Season Preview Story Tools: Print Email Giles Elliott / FOXSports.com Posted: 1485 days ago Who can stop Manchester United? It seems impossible. Ten points better than the rest of the English Premier League last season, champions for the last three years, and then Ruud van Nistelrooy and Juan Sebastian Veron go and do a deal with the Devils. My crystal ball has, however, been kicked around enough to get a little skewed, so here's the Giles Files on the prospects for this 10th EPL season. 1. Liverpool. Treble cup winners last year, the Gerard Houllier revolution at Anfield now rolls on towards the championship. Needing only to make one addition to last season's squad, much sought-after Norwegian youngster John Arne Riise, Houllier clearly feels he has his blend right. The Reds have also gained the knack of beating Man Utd and have even inherited the luck of their Manchester rivals. Key Man: Jari Litmanen - with all the talk of Owen, Fowler and Heskey, don't forget the Finn. 2. Leeds Utd. Liverpool apart, Leeds were England's best and most stylish team in Europe last season. David O'Leary, like Houllier, already has his team in place, but with Harry Kewell now fully fit, plus Rio Ferdinand and Robbie Keane both bedded in from the start of the campaign, Leeds look faster and stronger. Second best though will leave O'Leary to state that the Whites are just a bunch of kids, as he heads off to Old Trafford. Key Man: David Batty - has a winner's medal and a winner's mentality.

EPL Fantasy RIPPLES ACROSS THE POND: NICK WEBSTER's EPL gossip Story Tools: Print Email Nick Webster / FOXSports.com Posted: 1485 days ago Hello and welcome to ripples from across the pond. The weekly scandalmonger from the land that brought you fish, chips, steak and kidney pies and of course the gossip laden EPL. On the subject of Anglo-French relations, things have gotten out of hand at Liverpool involving two Scousers (Liverpudlians) and another Frenchman. This isn't the three musketeers by the way. In a training ground bust-up, young Robbie Fowler, no stranger to controversy, had an exchange of words with Gerard Houllier's number two, old big nose himself, Phil Thompson. The two men, both Anfield legends went beak to beak. In the resulting fall out, Gerard dropped Robbie from the squad until he repented and said he was sorry. Robbie though is as stubborn as they come. It wasn't until he realized Monsieur Houllier is even more hard headed than he is, that he backed down and groveled at Phil's feet for forgiveness. So now they've kissed and made up, for the moment. Finally Spud (Leicester boss Peter Taylor) must be feeling like a relation to his namesake Graham Taylor (ex Watford boss) aka 'Turnip Head' after his sides five nil mashing by Prem new boys Bolton. Spud, who has taken the art of thoughtfully scratching his chin to a new level will soon be scratching around for a new job if his lads get roasted again. With the chips down the Leicester faithful were not best pleased and their anger boiled over with chants of Taylor is a 'French Fry'. Supposedly the 'French Fry' is now on his way to Cherie Blair!. Next week the soap opera continues, so stay tuned. Cheers and get the beers in.

Extractions: David Ginola, the star French soccer player, traveled to Angola for a two-day visit on August 31. Ginola's visit was timed to coincide with the August 31 commemoration of the death of Princess Diana, who had galvanized international support for the anti-land mine campaign by visiting Angola in January 1997. Ginola began his stay in Angola by visiting the town of Kuito, which had sustained high levels of damage during the years of fighting. Ginola also visited a Red Cross orthopedic center in Luanda that manufactures prosthetic limbs for people who have been injured by land mines. In addition, he observed a mine clearance operation and attended a soccer match between two teams of land mine victim survivors. Ginola, who plays for the British league, Tottenham Hotspur, stated that he was deeply affected by the distress he saw in the eyes of the maimed children. "They didn't say anything, didn't ask for anything, but in their eyes I saw such distress ... they didn't need words. It was a cry from the heart and it's me who will speak for them," he told government officials, and athletic and media representatives. The soccer player's visit to Angola was arranged by both the French and British Red Cross organizations. A spokeswoman for the British Red Cross stated that Ginola is "trying to highlight the plight of land mine survivors and the importance of mine clearance, with a view to encouraging fund-raising. It remains a massively important issue. There are eight million to eleven million mines in the country, one for each member of the population." Angola's Ministry of Health has reported that there are about 100,000 people in the country maimed by land mines.

Extractions: ATLANTA (CNNSI.com) U.S. Major League Soccer club D.C. United defeated Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 on Thursday in a benefit game at White Hart Lane in London. D.C. became the first professional American club to play a friendly in the home of an English Premier League side. "Tonight was a great advertisement for Major League Soccer," said United coach Ray Hudson, a native of Newcastle, England. "We played attractive, attacking soccer in a big-time atmosphere against a first-class opponent and got a deserved result." Many of Tottenham's former greats including Paul Gascoigne, Juergen Klinsmann and David Ginola returned for the benefit match played to support former Hotspur players who have since fallen on hard times. In the 85th minute, Guest player Wade Barrett broke the seal. After collecting the ball in midfield, Richie Williams spotted Moreno, whose flick on to Barrett left him free in the box, and San Jose's All-Star defender calmly beat Lars Hirschfeld for the tally. Lineups D.C. United: Nick Rimando; Milton Reyes, Eddie Pope (Ivan McKinley-46'), Jeff Agoos, Wade Barrett; Ben Olsen (Petter Villegas-78'), Richie Williams, Marco Etcheverry (Capt.) (Eliseo Quintanilla-71'), Bobby Convey; Santino Quaranta (Ali Curtis-83'), Jaime Moreno.

It's only been two days since the final and already it's like it never happened. No World Cup section on teletext or anything. Firstly, much as it pains me to say it, you have to give the Germans credit I do happen to think that Oliver Kahn is very overrated . He makes simple saves look spectacular and he surpasses David James' inability to catch a cross. His shot stopping is up there with the best but his all round game (plus a crucial mistake in the final) makes it impossible for me to agree with his award of the FIFA Golden Boot. For me, without a doubt, the player of the tournament is the best all round centre foward on the planet, his Brazil were not the only team to stand out in a footballing sense. Turkey and Senegal were marvellous to watch, and the best teams in the competition along with the South Americans. Of course there is South Korea; but though they triumphed against some overwhelmingly improbable odds and knocked out two of the favourites for the competition, I wasn't as impressed with their football. That said, talk of match fixing is an insult to the incredible team spirit and hard work that took the Koreans so far in their World Cup. History will record the efforts of the giant killers favourably. I've heard it said that this World Cup was dissapointing because it didn't unearth any new starlets. To them I say, would you have considered signing;
