Extractions: Press centre Miami, 8 November 2004 Soccer stars will meet in Miami on Saturday 13 November to support the boys and girls of Haiti, affected by the recent passage of Hurricane Jeanne. A selection of the Brazilian professionals who comprised the team that won the 1994 World Cupincluding players like Bebeto and Dungawill face off against the current Haitian national team in a friendly match whose object is to focus attention on the tragic situation of Haiti and to raise funds to finance part of UNICEFs activities on the island. Tropical Storm Jeanne affected more than 150,000 boys and girls in Haiti. UNICEF, in coordination with the other United Nations agencies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs), is supporting the work of reconstructing schools, rehabilitating health centres, and providing psychosocial support to families who are living in shelters since the storm and facing very traumatic experiences, declared Nils Kastberg, UNICEFs Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean. This soccer match symbolizes our commitment to the Haitian people in the fact of this tragedy and our commitment to support their efforts to recover stability as son as possible. The sporting match will take place in the Orange Bowl stadium and will be followed by a game for the World Cup 2006 classifications between Mexico and St. Kitts and Nevis. Through ticket sales for these two matches, UNICEF will raise funds to finance programmes in health, nutrition, education and protection in Haiti.

Extractions: Suggestion Box Previous Next Menu Things Japanese - Soccer World Cup 2002 Part 1 Part 2 The biggest sporting event in Japan's history was the 1964 Olympic games, which brought Japan to the attention of the world. The Shinkansen was especially built for it and it also debuted the first use of computers to keep results. It was reported to be the most expensive Olympics ever (at the time) with $3 billion spent to put Japan on the world map. Since then, aside from the Winter Olympics in Nagano in 1998, Japan has not held a sporting event to match this. This will all change next June when the biggest sporting event in the world is co-hosted by Japan and South Korea. The 2002 Soccer World Cup will be the first to be held in Asia and the first to be co-hosted by two countries. Many people were surprised when the announcement was made by FIFA in 1996 that the competition would be hosted jointly by two countries who have a turbulent history. Both countries were unhappy at the decision - South Korea felt that he had shown, by hosting the Summer Olympics in 1988 that it could stage the World Cup by itself and Japan, through the successful launch of the J-League in Japan, thought it had the infrastructure to also host the competition on it's own. Japan and South Korea fought a bitter campaign to host World Cup 2002 with each nation accusing the other of bribery and underhand tactics - amongst other things. Since then, relations between the two hosts had steadily improved until July this year when the issue of a new controversial school textbook authorized by the Japanese Ministry of Education. The issue centered around Japanese colonization of Korea from 1910 to 1945 with the school texts perceived to distort history and attempt to gloss over Japan's wartime atrocities. Co-hosting has led, up to now at least, to a gradual liberalization of the ban in South Korea on Japanese contemporary culture and there has also been a significant increase in the number of visitors between the two countries.

These days the federation is recruiting many workers who do not fit the traditional image of a typical trade unionist. While many of our members still work in factories and mines, a growing number work in very different sectors of society, some of them in what some might regard as 'glamorous' professions - acting and sport. Two of COSATU's most recent affiliates are the SA Footballer Players Union and the Performing Arts Workers' Equity. The Shopsteward asked Supersport United player John Moeti and film and TV actress Connie Chiume why they are part of the union.
