Reina was born in Tegucigalpa in the Francisco Moraz¡n department of Honduras. A leader of the Liberal Party, he was elected president in free and fair elections on November 28, 1993. He fought corruption and violations of human rights, helping to make Honduras one of the most stable countries in the region. As constitutionally mandated, he retired after one term. After leaving office, he served as president of the Central American Parliament from 1998 until 1999. In August 2003, he committed suicide in Tegucigalpa because of his debilitating illnesses.
