Extractions: May 12, 2005 Indian soccer is ready to take off. The Soccer center of India Kolkata is booming with hopes and aspiration. According to IANS, Indian football captain Baichung Bhutia, who was released from the hospital on Wednesday afternoon, said he was feeling much better and hoped to come back stronger next season. Bhutia, who was admitted to the hospital two days ago, has been detected with hyper-thyroid and minor liver dysfunction. Dr Mahesh Goenka, who is treating the ace striker, said, ''''medication has already begun and looking at the way he is responding we feel that he should start practising within three weeks and within seven weeks he should be back at his prime.'''' Bhutia, who looked a lot more fresh, said, ''''I am still feeling depressed at letting down my club at the crunch time. The fact that I will not be able to don my country's colours during the Pakistan tour is also hurting me.''''
Extractions: May 14, 2005 Was it intentional? Was it a set up? Ganguli was sure perplexed. According to media sources, While asserting that the six-ODI ban on Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly was not ''harsh'', cricketing legend Steve Waugh, on Friday, found fault with Ganguly's teammates for not alerting him about the slow over rate. "I do not think action against Sourav is harsh, but the teammates also let him down by not making him alert on the slow over rate," Waugh told newspersons after a meeting with West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadev Bhattacharjee at the state secretariat. Waugh said as captain, Ganguly should be aware of his responsibilities and ensure that his teammates followed the rules of the game. "There is a rule book and everybody is aware of the rules of the game. As captain and leader of the team he has also the responsibility to ensure that his teammates abided by the rules."

Football Baichung Bhutia The tattoo on his right arm speaks of the intense love this young Sikkimese has for the sport - it is a meticulously imprinted picture of footballer in action. When he was a kid he would scan newspapers to see if there was any football match being aired on TV. If yes, he would take a three-hour bus ride from his native Tinkitam to Gangtok to watch the matches as his village had no television sets. Bhutia is today the only Indian footballer to play professional club soccer in England. He was selected by second division club F.C. Bury for its squad - and it was a dream come true to play against the likes of David Beckham and Andy Cole of Manchester United in an Exhibition Match.
Extractions: he brings glory to his club and country By DEBAPRIYA GHOSH Surely, on silent Sunday after-noons, Baichung Bhutia, 26, must be wondering about the way his life has turned out. It is a fantasy come true. Born in the enchanting village of Tinkitam in Sikkim, way up in the mountains, he showed early skill with the ball. It would have remained a pastime but for former India internationals Bhaskar Ganguly and Surajit Sengupta who spotted him during a State Bank of India soccer clinic in Gangtok. Today, Baichung is the toast of the nation after his sterling performance in the LG Asean Club Cup football championship held in Jakarta last month, where East Bengal became the first Indian club to win an international title. They beat favourites BEC Tero Sasana of Thailand, 3-1, in the final, with Baichung scoring the second goal. He took his tally to nine and was voted player of the tournament. Clearly, India's captain leads from the front.

Extractions: East Bengal claimed it had finalised a deal with Indian soccer captain Baichung Bhutia for the coming season. "After much discussions, we have finalised a deal with Baichung. He has agreed to play for us once he is back after a two-month stint with a Malaysian club," UB-East Bengal Football Team Private Limited director Amit Sen said in Kolkata on Monday. Sen said Bhutia, who left for Delhi during the day to finalise the visa formalities for his Malaysia trip, would sign the agreement once he returned from the national capital in the next couple of days. "Or else, we will courier his papers to Malaysia," Sen said, adding: "regardless of when he signs, we have got a gentleman's word from him". Bhutia, who is expected to leave for Malaysia later this week, could not be contacted. Only last week Bhutia had complained about the 'shabby treatment' meted out to him by East Bengal, alleging that the club had delayed clearing his last year's dues. The striker even approached Mohun Bagan on Friday. The ice started melting after a meeting between East Bengal football secretary Santosh Bhattacharya and the player on Saturday. Yesterday, Baichung had a detailed meeting with Sen where the issue seems to have been thrashed out.

Extractions: Star striker Baichung Bhutia on Monday said the upcoming ASEAN club football championship will be a big test not just for East Bengal but for Indian football as well. Bhutia, the only Indian to play as a professional in England for second division side FC Bury two seasons back, is confident that National Football League champions East Bengal will put up an impressive performance in the inaugural edition of the ASEAN Club tournament in Indonesia. "It is a big tournament for us and we have been preparing hard for the last one month. We have got a real good chance to do well and there will be good competition with some strong teams participating," Bhutia said, analysing the champion club's chances in the July 13-26 tournament. "The tournament will be important not just for East Bengal but for Indian football as well, as it is a good chance to make a mark in Asia. So we will be more positive," said Bhutia, who was in Delhi to endorse the Kingfisher Corporate 5's football tournament. Bhutia, who will leave for Indonesia from Kolkata on Tuesday night, is in good form. On Saturday he scored twice in a 3-0 rout of his former club Mohun Bagan in the Kolkata Super Division League.
South Asian Soccer Supremacy Scintillating goals by skipper Bruno Coutinho and baichung bhutia earned Bruno is the Indian soccer star to be watched for a couple of years at least. http://www.indianfootball.com/article/article023.html
Extractions: South Asian Soccer Supremacy: India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, Maldives, Bangladesh and Pakistan battled it out at Goa's Nehru Stadium in Margao for South Asian soccer supremacy, in the South Asian Football Federation Coca Cola Cup tournament from April 22 to May 1. The gleaming trophy was, however, retained by hosts India by outsmarting Bangla Desh 2-1. Guitars, cymbals, ghumots and crackersthe trappings of the Goa Carnavalwere all there while the crowd cheered, and India applied pressure and dominated the proceedings. Despite the territorial superiority, the Indian forwards failed to connect passes effectively, giving the impression that the vibrant Bangla Deshis, who put a fine display to defeat Nepal in the semis, would carry the day. In the 25th minute, however, Indias mercurial forward Baichung Bhutia, worked his way through the Bangla Desh defence maze and minussed the ball to Bruno Coutinho from the left flank. Bruno, with a penchant for placing himself within the scoring range, crowned Indias first-half dominance with a rasping drive to give India 1-0 lead. Bhutia scored a beautiful goal in the last minute of the first half to raise the tally to 2-0. Bangla Deshs usual tactics of long passes which had proved effective against the other sides, proved rather futile against the Indians today. But they did configure effective triangles, and strikers Mohammed Mizanur Rehman and Alfaz Ahmed launched dangerous counter-attacks. However, Indias "iron man Robert Fernandes", "the last line in India's defence", and Deepak Mondal were ever ready to weather any storm.
