Back to biography list No study of Italian culture would be complete without some acknowledgment of the importance of sport, especially soccer to the Italian people. Silvio Berlusconi, the recent Prime Minister, heads a political party named after the popular soccer cheer "Forza Italia," and in fact gained some of his popularity through his ownership of the powerful club A.C. Milan, a dominant team throughout Europe in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The game is followed fanatically by millions throughout the country, and is easily the most popular national sport (Santaga). With the importance of soccer throughout the country and avid following by so many fans of their local professional teams, many popular players have been produced. Players such as Paolo Maldini, Franco Baresi, Alessandro Del Piero, and Salvatore Schillaci have all inspired faithful followers in Italy. However, one star has shown brightly over Italian soccer throughout the 1990s: Roberto Baggio. No other Italian player has been quite so influential both within the country and throughout the world; by now the very name Roberto Baggio has almost become synonymous with Italian soccer. Born the sixth of eight children on February 18, 1967 in Caldogno, a small town just north of the city of Vicenza, he spent his formative years doing what so many other young Italian boys do: playing soccer whenever possible. Often he would stay at the park all afternoon into the evening, going home only when it got too dark to continue. One game he would play for hours involved practicing shooting a ball over a tall hedge in his yard with spin so that it would dip down and hit his fence. This simulated the way free kicks need to be shot in games when the opposing teams build human walls with their players to block shots straight at the goal. His great skill at shooting free kicks over the wall and into the goal are a direct product of the hedge game' he played in his youth.(Santaga).

Extractions: Our Paesani by Francesca Di Meglio JANUARY 5, 2004 - Recently, soccer star Roberto Baggio announced that he plans to retire at the end of the 2003-04 Serie A season in May, a decision that should have all of Italy crying. Italians had to give up, once and for all, on the one dream that united the nation: seeing the 36-year-old striker sport the national team blue for a final chance at redemption. In 1994, he led the team to the World Cup final in the United States and infamously missed the penalty kick that cost Baggio and Italy victory against Brazil - and no one seems to have gotten over it.
