Extractions: BOSTON (AP) Rosalynn Sumners, a three-time U.S. and 1984 Olympic silver medalist, was inducted into the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame on Friday night. Sumners, who also won the 1983 world championship before finishing second to Katarina Witt at the Sarajevo Olympics, recently retired after a 13-year stint with the Stars on Ice tour. She did not miss a show in those 13 years. She now is a figure skating commentator who worked the 1998 Olympics in that capacity. Also entering the Hall were Gary Visconti, Don Laws and Arthur Vaughn. Visconti won the U.S. title in 1965 and '67 and was a two-time world bronze medalist. He finished fifth in the 1968 Olympics. Currently a coach, Visconti works with Trifun Zivanovic, who was third at the 1999 nationals.

Extractions: Welcome to Studio 54.. (or some such..) Gheorge boogies to 70âs cool. Nice development with step sequences and spins, but mistakes on jumps. Urbas seemed like a 70âs throwback skating to 80âs music (Phantom) â what is this retro-virus going around? Again, problems with jumps but spins better than before, steps not so much so. Lukas Rakowski: Again, excellent spins and clean jumps this time, but boy does the boy need more presence. But I doubt his performance score will be much lower than his technical as the judges still wonât differentiate properly between the points they give for skating skill and artistic expression. (Hah! Interpretation was his highest markâ¦) Danilchenko: what we noticed most was dear old Zagorodniuk in a Zorro-beard⦠Ahem. Too much content packed in the beginning of the programme, and the problem with Zorbas as a music to skate to is that you are very likely to look slow, as the music is SO fast. As did Vitaly. Extractions: Jumps : This is the place to be for AVI and GIF files on all the major figure skating jumps. You'll also find specific tips for each jump as well as general advice. The advice presented here was divinely inspired from visions after inhaling Zamboni fumes at the Alter of the Triple Axel. The advice itself isn't as important as getting you to think critically about technique. You can't always rely on instinct but you can on sound technique. If you're like most people you probably skipped right past the spin page and went straight for the jumps. On any given freestyle session you'll see people jump until they drop and only do about 3 minutes on spins. My first piece of sage advice for becoming a better jumper is to forget about jumping. Spend more time spinning. Great spinning leads to great jumping, NOT the other way around. The back spin in particular is a very valuable tool for learning how to do multirotation jumps. There are a few basic principles that are common to all jumps. This picture shows the basic air position every multirotational jump should strive to achieve. Big hair is optional. A major advance in figure skating technique in the 1940's was the concept of crossing your feet in the air when rotating. Fifty years of skating and that's the biggie. In another hundred years they might figure out why Zambonis have headlights. Questions such as why ice dancing is considered a sport may never be answered.

Extractions: AP BOSTON (AP) He's back! Todd Eldredge? Well him, too. But Thursday night belonged to Michael Weiss, who was staging his own kind of comeback in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. With all the talk about Eldredge's return from a two-year hiatus, two-time defending champion Weiss might have felt like a forgotten man. He's been idle since November, where he struggled to finish sixth at the Cup of Russia. A toe injury and back woes sidelined Weiss not that anyone would have known it from his performance in the men's short program. "Just getting a solid program under my belt, because I have had such an injury-prone year, to finally go out there and be able to skate with 100 percent confidence, it's something I haven't felt this year," Weiss said. "It was great for me to go out there and feel like I'm back again." Back with a vengeance.

Extractions: Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY Michelle Kwan probably could have won her third national title wearing snowshoes. To her credit, the two-time world champion was unaffected by the lack of competition at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships. Her superb free skate, marred only by a late fall on a triple lutz she didn't need, was plenty good Saturday night. "It was one of those performances where I just let it go," said Kwan. Earlier Saturday, after two years of barely missing a national title, Michael Weiss was nearly flawless in the men's event. Kwan, who has won the U.S. title in 1996, '98 and this year, made her other six triple jumps, including a triple toe loop-triple toe loop combination, look effortless. Her spins were precise and she ignored her fall to finish strongly with a series of spins. "I don't know what happened. I thought I had it," she said of the fall. "I was straight in the air. I guess I just didn't check out, but I knew to get right back up and keep on going. "From the beginning, my goal was to do the triple-triple, because I haven't done it in a year or maybe more," added Kwan, 18, of Torrance, Calif.
